Not really, alive and flawed would be a better definition.
I will agree that the interest in America is vastly decreased over the years, between a combination of a lack of good American Heavyweights and the appearance of MMA. But worldwide the sport has went from strength to strength.
In Britain you've had guys like Hatton and Calzaghe being very popular and topping sports personality polls. Pay Per views have also been selling well here for the past couple years, Hatton was hitting the million mark before he unofficially retired and now Haye generated 1 million with his win over Valuev. Hatton and Khan have also been selling out venue after venue and of course Ricky even sold out Manchester City's soccer stadium.
In Germany the Klitschko's have been selling out soccer stadiums and have been getting great tv ratings, between the 6-8 million mark.
Japan has also been doing well with the colorful Kameda brothers, their tv ratings have been as high as 11 million.
