Richard Schaefer trying to make Khan vs Maidana happen in Vegas or Detroit

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is also working on a fight that would pit super lightweight champion Amir Khan against top-challenger Marcos Maidana. Schaefer said HBO gave him a money number and he has made offers to Khan and Maidana over the past few days.

"I'm waiting to hear back from them," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com. "It's in the fighters' court."

Schaefer said it would be contested in either Las Vegas or Detroit. Detroit? Schaefer explained that the greater Detroit area is said to have the largest Muslim population of any U.S. city. Khan is Muslim.

Schaefer noted that Prince Naseem Hamed - also Muslim - in 1999 fought a featherweight title fight against Cesar Soto in Detroit.

The arena in Manchester would be much better since Khan will sell out there regardless of the opponent. Khan vs Bradley or Alexander would be better suited for an American venue.

No but you take a population of 300,000 and if it is only 2% that's a heck of an incremental addition in what has historically been a pretty good fight town.

There is a huge Muslim population in ALL western countries, and it is skyrocketing. That is what Khan is counting on. Scary.

I don't get this BS. Calzaghe fought Hopkins and Jones over here and ended up making far less than he would have in the UK. I know GBP wants to make Khan a star over here, but why not just pack the house in England?

My guess is HBO isn't keen on broadcasting from England.
