| Fine. I work for Dana. I just pretend to live in Alabama. Regardless, Colin hammered the newspapers and baseball people. And here is a link to the Boston news article he was talking about, which isn't good. http://www.boston.com/sports/other_sports/articles/2010/08/25/rage_in_cage_a_knockout_in_mass/Rage in cage a knockout in Mass. Ultimate fighting’s debut set to break box-office recordsBlood will be spilled and brains rattled. Body parts will be wrenched and battered, some damaged. Caged men will fight, and a 21st-century crowd with a taste for primal combat rooted in ancient civilizations will spend big money to celebrate the spectacle. It’s the Ultimate Fighting Championship, once a widely banned novelty decried as “human cockfighting,’’ now one of the world’s fastest-growing sports — a smash hit from Boston to Belfast to Abu Dhabi. Newly sanctioned by Governor Deval Patrick and the Legislature amid the hunt for fresh revenue, the UFC will debut in Massachusetts Saturday at TD Garden as one of the highest-grossing events ever on Causeway Street. With box-office prices ranging from $75 to $600, the UFC’s inaugural mixed martial arts night in Boston is expected to generate nearly $4 million in ticket sales and pump an additional $6 million into the recession-racked local economy. No single indoor sports event in Boston history has generated a greater financial boon for the state, industry analysts said. The UFC, in addition to possibly selling out the Garden (average ticket price: $244), expects to draw as many as 30,000 to a Fan Expo Friday and Saturday at the Hynes Convention Center (advance ticket prices: $50 for both days, $30 for Friday only, $35 for Saturday). With as many as 1 million customers also projected to spend $45 each for a pay-per-view broadcast of the event, the UFC has gone from banned-in-Boston to striking it rich in the Bay State. “However they have figured out the magic formula, the UFC is without a doubt a very, very hot property,’’ said Patrick Moscaritolo, president of the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s going to give a great kick to our economy.’’ The UFC, at its core, is a melange of martial arts: jiujitsu, judo, karate, wrestling, boxing, and kickboxing, among others. Barefoot combatants, wearing only trunks and small gloves, battle for three five-minute rounds in an octagonal cage to try to knock the other out or beat the other into submission. They rely on maneuvers aptly described as rear naked chokes, guillotines, and mounted crucifixes, complemented by powerbombs, neck cranks, and head kicks. Forbidden is the worst back-alley brutality — eye-gouging, head-butting, hair-pulling, and biting — that marginalized the UFC as a freak show before new owners took over in 2001. “In the early days, the UFC was kind of renegade,’’ TD Garden president John Wentzell said. “That’s not the case anymore. It’s gone mainstream.’’ The blockbuster weekend promises to generously reward the Vegas-based UFC for spending two years and nearly $225,000 lobbying Beacon Hill to enact regulations sanctioning the sport. Despite some objections — “I think it’s barbaric to put people in cages and allow them to beat each other up,’’ said Representative Barbara L’Italien, an Andover Democrat — the Legislature last fall overwhelmingly approved a new State Athletic Commission to govern mixed martial arts. Patrick signed the bill last November, clearing the way for regulated caged combat in the state. “It’s going to be the biggest fight event in Massachusetts history,’’ said Todd Grossman, a member of the athletic commission and deputy general counsel of the state Department of Public Safety. Breaking records is nothing new to the UFC. The fight club earlier this year packed arenas in Sydney, Abu Dhabi, and Montreal. After Boston, it’s London in October, Oberhausen, Germany, in November, and Dublin next March. At nearly every stop, sales marks have been broken and the UFC’s value has risen through the fiscal stratosphere. Nine years after former Boston tough guy Dana White and two Vegas brothers bought the distressed enterprise for $2 million, the owners have reported receiving buyout offers exceeding $1 billion. According to Forbes magazine, the UFC has become the UCM: the Ultimate Cash Machine. “It’s a marketer’s dream,’’ said Rich Krezwick, president of Devils Arena Entertainment, whose Prudential Center in Newark recorded the largest single-event gross in ticket sales for an indoor event in New Jersey — nearly $4 million — when the UFC played there in March. UFC has eclipsed boxing and professional wrestling, whose pay-per-view numbers the UFC has dwarfed. Last year alone, the UFC’s pay-per-view revenue hit $350 million, double the $175 million generated by HBO programming, primarily boxing, according to the media research firm SNL Kagan. Pick a sports-themed product — video games, DVDs, cable television shows, closed-circuit broadcasts, action figures, trading cards, magazines — and the UFC ranks first or among the leaders in global sales. Its inaugural video game, “UFC Undisputed 2009,’’ has sold nearly 4 million units, and a 2010 edition is reportedly on pace to top 4 million. TD Garden officials said Saturday’s event may threaten the facility’s overall record for a single event, set in 2006 by Barbra Streisand. The Garden would not release sales figures, but box office prices for Streisand’s sold-out concert ranged from $100 to $750. “We’ve seen the explosion that has taken place the last few years with the UFC and have watched with envy as other cities have hosted events,’’ Wentzell said. “We’re thrilled it’s finally coming to fruition here.’’ The weekend extravaganza also promises a big payday for the state, which will receive 5 percent of the gross ticket sales (1 percent is earmarked for a fund for injured fighters) plus $75,000 of the broadcast revenues. The windfall includes state taxes on merchandise sales, meals, lodging, liquor, and other sources. But not every state has embraced the UFC, which is not for the faint-hearted. While 44 states have sanctioned the sport, the UFC has yet to win approval in New York, where the state’s Catholic leaders have denounced the sport as “human dogfighting.’’ Grossman, who helped write the Massachusetts mixed martial arts law, said some UFC opponents lack a full understanding of the sport. “There is blood involved, and when there is blood involved, people cringe,’’ Grossman said. “But these are highly trained athletes who are incredibly skilled in the martial arts. “People who aren’t really educated about the sport choose to see only the blood, and they say, ‘How can we allow it?’ But you can argue that mixed martial arts are safer than boxing and some other contact sports, like football.’’ Several fighters have died competing in mixed martial arts, but never in a UFC event. The most serious injuries yet diagnosed among UFC fighters have been broken bones as well as joint and tissue damage. Local favorite Kenny Florian, a Boston College graduate who has gained national recognition and made a comfortable living as a UFC fighter, said his injuries have been limited to a couple of fractures to his nose and a training-related staph infection. He is one of more than 300 fighters under contract with the UFC. More than 75 percent of them hold college degrees, and the best among them can make millions of dollars a year, though many earn less than six figures. Florian acknowledged that casual observers may not instantly embrace the UFC. He is scheduled to face Gray “The Bully’’ Maynard Saturday. “There is something raw and shocking when you see someone get knocked down in the ring and the fight continues,’’ Florian said. “But UFC fighters are some of the best athletes in the world. They are highly experienced, intelligent, and trained in strategies of the sport. People just have to get used to it.’’ Indeed, many fans relish both the carnage and the arena experience. Saturday’s lavishly produced event — replete with lighting effects and booming theme music for each combatant — will feature a title fight between lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and his top rival, BJ Penn. Prominent, too, on the 11-fight card will be a match between 42-year-old former boxing champ James Toney, in his UFC debut, and the sport’s aging legend, 47-year-old Randy Couture. “The Garden is going to be filled to the rafters and the energy level is going to be amazing,’’ said Daniel Farrell, a 36-year-old entrepreneur so enthusiastic about the UFC that he plans to open a “Soul Mind Fist’’ retail store in Plainville selling mixed martial arts gear. “It’s going to be like a rock concert and a full-contact chess match all in one.’’ | |

| Colin said guys around his age(45), that they have a hard time stomaching a guy that is dazed on the ground getting jumped on and pouned on. Dana countered by saying it is better then being badly dazed, get back up, get badly dazed, get back up again and getting dazed again before the fight is called. | |

| Bobbitt he is not an idiot! He is one of the top radio shows in the country and an educated man. He is telling people the truth and gave the UFC props while bashing MMA's bashers. You should be thrilled with Cowheard. I grant he was not as quick to jump on the sport as Rome did, but he is not denying being some piece of shit cock blocker, to coin a phrase. No the biggest problem we have are morons like Michael Wilbon who do their best to ignore the reality of the current situation so they can promote a sport that has slow growth and whose numbers are not nearly as big as he wants them to be. Regardless, baseball is dying on television and basketball isn't much farther ahead. We haven't even gotten a decent network deal yet! | |

| Baseball isn't fucking dying. I live in the middle of Cubs/Cards country. That is one of the most basal cultural institutions in the area. God, Country, Family, Cubs/Cards. In that order, but with numerous people who dispose of one or all of them at the expense of their team...
I suppose I could see how some feel like it's dying, depending on what group you fall into. I've worked in two offices for extended periods of time in my career and at one, baseball was a non factor and at another where it was as big or bigger than the NFL. | |
