Rome has really jumped on with MMA and giving MMA a ton of love. Herd likes to rub people the wrong way just because, he has some Skip Bayless in him.

No he is discussing some bullshit sociologist report stating that we aren't developed enough to accept women's sports and we have an obligation to watch and pay for it. He is saying otherwise and that all the numbers are pointing that MMA and to a lesser degree Hockey have the real beef, because they have numbers that produce. In fact he pointed out that the MLB went up against one of the UFC's PPV and got crushed.

I listed to local radio until 10am(central time) and then Herd from 10-12 until SVP comes on. I could listen to Rome who gives great interviews but I can't stand all the extras he has. Me and LTFG have had this talk many times.

And agree wholeheartedly... Since he got off of vacation in early July he seems to have backed off of the repetitive sound bite crap (Someone must have got in his ear), but still gets annoying at times. It would be nice if more people like Herd and Dan Patrick see the light and start giving MMA more positive hype, but I'm certainly not holding my breath waiting for it to happen...

I hear that. Any sound bite that is played more than 2-3 times in a day is too much. Rome used to rip talking heads for being unprepared for the day and taking tons of calls to cover their asses... Is playing non-stop sound bites for 15 minutes at a time really any different? I really hope that someone close really did get in his ear and that he will continue to scale that crap back. His show really had taken a turn for the worse since he swapped producers a couple years back...

Yeah I wish Rome would just do interviews non stop, he is great at interviews and always gets very good guest on the show. I'm still torn on days on either listening to Rome or Herd. I usually choose Herd because I don't have to mute my PC for a extended time because of sound bits and I also get an extra hour of SVP

I quote "The WNBA and women's soccer get on TV and all this promotion, and nobody watches it! If anyone has a real bitch about not getting air time from the networks it is MMA! Have you seen there numbers? They are number two in the primary demographics behind the NFL, and nobody will give them prime real estate." I am doing my best to remember the quote word for word, but he stated essentially that several times and blasted MLB. He also pointed out that Baseball had a game on ESPN and lost to UFC Live on Versus, which only reaches 10% the amount of the same audience as ESPN.

Oh hell no! In fact Anik got him to buy a PPV and he said it was entertaining. The problem Colin and the younger thinking cats at ESPN is all the old baseball codgers sitting around who are dear old friends of the President of ESPN. Baseball sucks and is dying.

Can you not bitch about baseball though while plugging MMA. Instantly alienate baseball's audiance, and while it varies regionally, Baseball is as big as it's ever been in many places.

He is actually talking about MMA right now. He said MMA is killing baseball and other sports(in ratings) but still can manage to get a network deal. He said they have very talented young athletes but still can't make it on ESPN or major networks.

That was a goofy thing to say. Both the logic behind that statement and the statement itself are flawed or innaccurate. Hockey and baseball are international sports too. Baseball is ten times as bigger in Japan than MMA is. Nevermind how big it is in Latin America. Hockey is popular all over Northern Europe and Russia.

Baseball will be where baseball is now. Hockey was never popular in mainstream America until the late 80s and early 90s. Baseball has been intertwined with our culture in the US for over 100 years. They cannot be compared.

Football is an American sport and hardly international at all and is the absolute king in the US, while futbol is the most international sport in the world and only this year barely scratched the sporting world surface in the USA.

I think Colin was talking on a national level, not international, Wolf. He's talking about American eyes to the sport and how MMA is killing other sports that get much more fanfare. But if you have 65 year old network heads calling the shots, they are going to go with what they are comfortable with rather than what actually moves the needle. Three major sports going on strike in the next 12 months won't change that fact! You could have scabs on the field/court/rink in football, hockey and basketball and they will still be putting them on TV over MMA due to their thickheaded mindsets and ties with Stern, Bettman and Goodell... Hell, they would give the WNBA, poker and midget wrestling more mainstream airtime before they'll take a more serious look at MMA...

In fairness to poker, dopes line up in droves to watch that junk.

And poker is cheap to air!

I think if there is a strike in baseball or basketball, we MIGHT get some real coverage. I think as it stands now, the fear is making a major investment into a sport some people still haven't grasped.
