| Some fighters miss the whole magic of the first "Liston - Clay" fight. You had an established man eater in Liston and a loud mouth guy coming off of a knockdown and a questionable decision win in Cassius Clay. The odds makers made Clay a 7-1 underdog. Considering the factors of this fight, the "House" would've been correct 9 out of 10 times with other fights that had factors resembling these. This night was special which is why history recorded it as such. However, there are fighters that just don't get this. I recall a pretty good fighter named "Lonnie Smith" challenging "Julio Chavez" with antics similar to Ali's. Acting hysterical, screaming, trying to attack Chavez only bought laughter from the Mexican and a horrible beating to Smith. The obnoxious Antonio Tarver had a lot to say before Bernard Hopkins but little to say after the boxing lesson he was given. Also, who can forget Lewis - Tyson. Often times, a loudmouth with a bunch of hot air is just that and nothing more. So, who has some examples of an obsessive talker getting his opponents fist, and his own foot in his mouth, for his trouble? | |

| Ricardo Mayorga vs. Oscar. That was some of the most personal stuff I have ever heard a fighter say to another fighter. He got under Oscar's skin and that seems to be very hard to do.
Also one of the Ali type moments would be when Tarver KO'd Roy. That was great. That line right before that fight was epic. |

| How about good ol' Sugar George Costner?
A fine welterweight of the 1940's. Got ranked as high as #2. Wins over guys like Sheik Rangel, Gene Burton and Kid Gavilan.
But he had a problem. There was another 1940's welterweight who had adopted the title "Sugar." They met in 1945 in Chicago. After the bell for the first round Ray Robinson held out his hands to touch gloves. Costner said "this ain't the last round." Robinson answered "It is for you, there is only one Sugar."
On crashing left hook two minutes later left Costner on his butt unable to move. KO1. | |
