PostSubject: WE MISSED IKE WILLIAMS   WE MISSED IKE WILLIAMS EmptyMon Aug 23, 2010 4:29 am

Powerpuncher is back less than a day and he finds what I think is a GAPING hole in our Immortals section.

Ike Williams

Lightweight champion of the 1940's with seven defenses. He defeated 28 ranked fighters out of 125 wins. An explosive puncher with 60KO's. Williams could move and he was tough. Seven wins over HOF fighters including Kid Gavilan, Beau Jack and Bob Montgomery.

1948 Fighter of the Year when he went 10-0 while lightweight champion.

marble on sam langford every one who voted for fighters in that era chose sam..i think it just was a ommision on sooners part..the job of calculating things he did exceptional sams in just a oversite....ike williams yes was a great lightweight one of the top 5 ever perhaps in that loaded division..hes perhaps a perfect example of a REAL HOFAMER but not an immortal.one great one whos left off amoung other great ones yes....its not in my view a gaping whole in our selection..he had a opprtunity to be nominated but wasnt..he deserved a nomination and perhaps that was an oversite on our part..he surely had a career of numerous wins over fantastic fighters but ike also has a career of losses to inferior competion in his absolute prime ..thats one of the reasons i vote noo to ike as a immortal..example he lost to joe miceli a oridinary second tier fighter who was a fighter who fought many greats beat a few but in reality talent wise there were always a dozen to 15 or more fighters better then him..he also struggled in one or 2 other fights with miceli..to further my vote ike lost to joyce not once or twice but THREE times in his prime..joyce was a top second tier fighter who fought the best of the best but lost to them all outside of ike..he was another fighter that in his day was inferior to 12-15-18 or more other fighters..ike is magnificent as a great as an immortal he deserves to be left off the selection for that he is not..it should be reserved for the extra extra special fighters...my vote is noo on ike.

to further my reasoning a floyd patterson a olyimpic champion the youngest ever to win the real lineal HW title the first ever to regain the legit heavy crown has a simiar percetage wise wins over rated fighters and hofamers as ike..floyd beat 13 ranked maybe 14 ranked heavies and koed 2 hall of famers in about 40 percent of ikes total fights..compareably thats equal to or surpasses ikes 28 wins and 6 hofamers wins..thats just one way of gaging greatness or a immortal.just one..another is who they lost to in there prime..surely no crediable boxing historian or knowledgeable fan would include floyd as a immortal or a top 100 ATG dispite the achievements he accomplished.

i vote yes but dmar makes some good arguements. i think that its safe to say that there are some "immortals" that have lost to second tier fighters even in their primes. back in the day they just fought so much that it seems as if it was inevitable unless you were just exceptional which i guess is what the immortal list is supposed to consist of. nonetheless, i vote yea.

I am shocked but you make a hell of an argument.

I was going to vote yes until I read your argument. You changed my mind.

d'mar makes a very effective argument. Honestly, with the info he brings up, I believe that Ike (One of my favorite guys) deserves to be nominated but falls short of being called an immortal. This is based on dmar's argument. I've seen Ike fight at his best, however I don't know as much about his career as d'mar or Marble.
