Gary Shaw not interested in Chad Dawson vs Tavoris Cloud, wants Lucian Bute next

Gary Shaw, promoter for IBO/WBC interim-light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson, was not impressed with last Saturday's win by IBF champion Tavoris Cloud. In the HBO televised co-feature from St. Louis, Cloud won a twelve round unanimous decision over veteran Glen Johnson. After the decision was announced, Cloud called for a fight with Dawson, but Shaw says the fight won't happen in the near future.

"As far as Tavoris Cloud goes, it proved that (41-year-old) Glen Johnson is getting older by the round. And it proved that Tavoris Cloud is just nothing. Does he really want to fight Chad next? I think that he wouldn't be making a wise decision. But he's not going to get that opportunity to fight Chad next," Shaw said. "By the way, I had Johnson beating Cloud by a round."

This coming Saturday, Dawson takes part in a unification clash with full WBC champion Jean Pascal. Should Dawson get past Pascal, Shaw plans to target a fight with IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute, and Team Dawson are willing to give Bute the homefield advantage. The weight is up in the air. Bute might move up, or Dawson might move down, or they might even meet in the middle.

"We don't have to drop to 168 to fight Lucian Bute. Maybe he would move up to fight Chad. That way, that would give him a shot at winning the 175-pound title and at the same time retain his own 168-pound title. But at the same time, Chad's got a really tough fight coming up against Jean Pascal this coming Saturday. So any talks about who he fights next is actually premature. But, I think Chad will win. I expect him to win. And I would like to fight Lucian Bute next," Shaw said.

Bute weighed 177.5 for Miranda the morning of the fight. There was a contract that neither fighter could exceed 178. The last time I checked Light Heavyweight had a 175 pound limit. Let them bang it out at light heavy.

I'm all for catchweights and I understand that they have been part of the sport from the beginning but in this case I feel that a catchweight is unnecessary.

ahh ok ill go along with that since your saying the weigh in is on the day of the fight lets say at noon..i agree.do it at 175.

If Dawson beats Pascal (which I assume he will), he'll be the ring champ at LH. Cloud who is currently 3 will move up to 1.

Dawson's team wants Bute purely because of money.

I disagree hardcore on the fight having to be at the Light Heavyweight limit, I don't like catchweights at all but I'd be willing to accept one for this fight considering Bute will want to go back down to 168lb after to face Super Six dropouts and of course the winner.

Marble Lucian Bute is a better boxer than Cloud, he'll provide Chad with a challenge.

But none of us have ANY idea what he is above 168 at this point. Weight changes what fighters can execute.

I'm not saying the weigh in is the day of the fight. What I'm saying is that Bute if rehydrates to 177.5 so easily that Miranda and his promotion/management team had to have a cap on how much Bute could actually weigh come fight night, the guy must kill himself to get down to 168. Bute is fighting on fight night with a cap above the light heavy limit. Since that's the case let them fight at light heavy.

On Friday, Bute (25-0, 20KOs) hit the official scale at 167.2-pounds. Miranda (33-4, 29KOs), now trained by Joe Goossen, was a pound under the super middleweight limit at 167-pounds.

At Saturday's safety weigh-in, where neither fighter is allowed to weigh more than 178-pounds, Lucian Bute was 177.4-pounds, and Edison Miranda came in at 177.2.

What if Bute wins the LightHeavy title? Does he immediatley vacate it to fight a loser of a tournament? Or does the loser move up to fight Bute? What if it's a close victory? Shouldn't Bute give Dawson a rematch? After Dawson just spent two years giving rematches you better believe that there will be a rematch clause at light heavy, especially if Dawson felt he killed himself to get down to 172 (HardcoreBEE24 rolls eyes at this hypothetical excuse). Your scenario is a senario for a guy that's fighting to lose, these guys don't fight to lose. Make the fight at 175.

The general rule in boxing is the bigger the division, the more money one makes. My guess is if Bute wins he stays there.

If Bute won I could see him fighting in both divisions, the opportunity to face the winner of the super six will be to lucrative to turn down.

I hear ya. But my guess is once he goes to 175, were he to win the crown, he won't be coming back.

He might do a Martinez and leave the door open for big fights.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. This is just Shaw talking. We haven't heard anything from Bute or Interbox to indicate interest. Bute doesn't need to concede a thing to Shaw or Dawson. Dawson wants to get a piece of Bute's fanbase so he can start to draw flies for a change.

Bute doesn't need Chad to be a draw Canvas because he's the draw in Montreal. If Bute wants back on HBO he'll need to face Dawson or Pavlik.

Bute can draw huge numbers in Montreal.

Dawson and Cloud would be lucky to draw 2500 people.

If I'm Bute, I don't move up unless the money is obscene.
