Can't agree with the article at all. I'll break it down very quickly.
"Was Clottey “popular” enough to deserve the fight against Pacquiao? Maybe not, but the rah rah fan pages out there need to get something through their windswept heads: NO ONE, aside from Floyd Mayweather Jr. is popular enough to face Manny Pacquiao. Yes, Arum would prefer to throw Pacquiao in with a Top Rank fighter, but only because outside alternatives are weaker, sales-wise."
The article then goes on to state/not state # of views and # in attendance for different fighters when it's convenient to validate its point.
The real situation is: Manny is the attraction and whoever he fights will bring in a marginal # of additional fans. A Top Rank guy might bring in more additional fans on his own than another opponent. So Top Rank is choosing to go that route instead of going with what people think will make a better fight.
Making the best fights is the best way to attract fans to the sport. After that you create an interest as to why people should watch, and let the product speak for itself. That's good promotion. At best, Arum is greedy and short-sighted. At worst he's an idiot.
