We old fogies sometimes get too caught up in how the world's greatest sport has declined. It has, a lot. But even this remnant that we have today is a remarkable, glorious, lesson teaching, character revealing, passionate, complex, brutal and within the ring, honest endeavor. Thaose characteristics make it fascinating and worth celebrating. Some specifics
The rise of Eastern Europe-The Ukranian Giants, Tomasz Adamek, Lucian Bute, Ruslan Chagaev, Zolt Erdai all come from an area that only a generation ago didn't exist in the world of pro boxing. As the USA has largely abandoned the heavyweight division, this area has kept it from falling completely apart. Adamek and Bute are exactly what we ask our fighters to be.
Youtube and the shrinking world-Heck five years ago, most Asian fighters, and fighters before a fan's time could be real mysteries. No more. It has never been easier to become educated on the sport's past or present. A decade or more ago it was hard to find footage of even the top Asian fighters, now they are at our fingertips. Hail youtube!
Max Kellerman-Boxing always needs rabid fans among its commentators. Kellerman's sheer exhuberance helps the sport.
The old guard-BHOP and James Toney can show one just about every trick, move, tactic and rule breaking possibilty that exists in the ring. It's like watching a master jewel thief at work.
The honest workman-Are they great? For the most part no. But they want to be. They have champion's hearts and a fighter's mindset. Men like Alfredo Angulo, Paul Williams, Mikkel Kessler, Vic Darchinyan and Carl Froch remain ther core of the sport.
The Cuban Invasion-These technically proficient fighters (Gamboa is actually getting there) are going to help bring back fundamentals to the sport. Rigondeaux and Lara will be special.
Sergio Martinez-'nuff said.
There is a LOT to be said for boxing at the moment. What else do you have?

Marble I am sad to say this but you also have to add in the Hype jobs that bring in the fans. These guys bring in new fans that do become lifelong fans. I introduced so far 8 of my friends to one of these guys and they are all huge boxing fans now. They never miss Friday night fights or any other boxing thats on TV and they but most of the PPV's.
Floyd and Manny- These guys have great tallent and do bring in the fans to the sport regardless of their rocky negotiations.

agreed. Coked up and crazy eyed is no way to go through life. The rest of Marble's assessments are spot on.

max is bugged eyed with a crazyed coke up look and his voice is one thats grating.he also talks to much..having said that and forget his opinions on fighters outside that i think hes very accurate in discribing whats realy happening in the ring and hes right on his stance about boxing commisions and many of the shear stupity thats in the sport today..overall though hes a plus or an asset.

Marble congratulations and thank you on a wonderful post. Your examples are excellent, and as someone who is getting very annoyed with the sport at the moment (to the point of being negative), I needed a fellow fan to remind me of the positive.
Sergio Martinez represents everything that is still good about boxing.

Admiration and rooting interests are two different things. I admire MANY fighters. I just don't care if they win or lose.
Nice cough though

Good to see you again Marble.
Have you read those damn Jordan books yet? LOL. I've moved onto A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin now and they are much better than the Jordan books.
Sorry to mislead you.

Yeah, I needed to see a post like this too. It's a good one with lots of examples as to why we still have the greatest sport in the world. Also, I'm a big Sergio fan too.
