Hopefully MMA will be as you say someday.
I however would like to see tournaments become the primary vehicle where MMA champions and challengers are crowned.
My ideal situation would actually be similar to kickboxing, tennis or golf where there are several "majors" each year, one in Vegas, one in NY, one in Japan etc. Different fighting surfaces in different tournaments. In tennis there is clay vs grass, football has domes and stadiums. Thanks for finally playing along. And I don't see any reason under a single banner that there can't be tournaments crowning a tournament champion (Over a month on the weekly shows ending at the PPV?)... I do see your point about a single entity sticking with one venue though... If it were the UFC, the octagon would be a staple. If it were someone else that came along and kicked Dana to the curb it could be just about anything. But I wouln't see them changing it up at all...

| Another thing that bugs me about one promotion under the UFC is that MMA would be significantly more boring with the same presentation over and over again. In other pro sports there are a ton of different networks and teams that do the games and it keeps it fresh.
Imagine a world where Mike Goldberg calls every important fight. That's a world I don't want to live in.

Huh? What the hell does that have to do with anything we have discussed? Are you saying that football, basketball, hockey and baseball (All right I'll give you that one) aren't geared towards all generations? Are you saying that even though I've spent a lifetime practicing the arts involved and followed the sport since its inception these thoughts aren't valid? Are you really this simple Wolf, because at times you show flashes of intelligence?... No, I was making a joke calling you old and saying if you can't handle a little ball busting, as is common practice among young men, maybe you should find somewhere "safer" to post.
The only one arguing here is you. The only one offended here is you. Calm the fuck down. I can bust with the best my boy... Poking at the ribs is all fine and dandy as long as people are smart enough to mix it up rather than stay on one subject. We have all established that I'm an elder statesmen here... Not as old as Thome me thinks though. As far as calming down, I think you are reading emotion in my posts that isn't there. When I start challenging others to fights you will know I'm annoyed... Seen anyone do that lately?

Lol...didn't say I could do that! But there are some other people in need! I agree with the Majors comment, just not sure how it would happen. I would love to see 4 huge events a year and smaller ones, but some that are close to major quality. Plus if they could do that and do them all over the country first, then the world, it would bring a lot more people on board with the sport. But you're right, it's very unrealistic.

Regardless, I think with weekly shows it would have to be mixed up... One thought just hit me... The other sports are seasonal, 5-7 months long. MMA weekly year around would be truly incredible.

| actually that is something we didn't consider. Sports need an off season to rest the public. Weekly events every week would probably hurt the sport in some ways.
MMA's majors should coincide with downspells in traditional sports.

| I see your point but there needs to be a happy medium between weekly events and an altogether off season. | |

| Right now, mid baseball season is easily the slowest time of mainstream sport. This is when MMA should have those tournaments.
Have a good weekend Ziggy...
You too I suppose Wolfdork...

| To do what Wolf is proposing would require all of the fighters to be free agents/free lancers. Obviously, this is never going to happen because organizations have a stranglehold on fighters through contracts that are extremely exclusive and restrictive. It is a great idea for sure, but it won't happen.
LTFG's idea is much more plausible. The UFC has proven to be the only organization that can maintain this level. Everyone is either a smaller, regional show or they have folded quickly trying to compete with the UFC. Really, minus all the weekly shows, we already have this idea in place. As far as the U.S. goes, the UFC has all the best fighters and the other organizations play minor league ball. Sure, there are great fighters here and there in the smaller orgs, however, the UFC has the lion's share of the talent. There will always be fighters who dominate the smaller orgs and people will speculate on how they might fare in the UFC.
If this would be a worldwide monopoly...wow, that would be spectacular. To see guys like Fedor, Mousasi, Aoki, Kid, etc. competing under one banner would be awesome.

| His idea isn't any more or any less realistic because it would require a complete restructuring of the UFC business model and a complete shift in the mentality Zuffa takes toward fighters. Fighter contracts, match making, title defenses and eliminators, and about every other facet of promoter-fighter interaction would need to be changed. Given the current climate of Zuffa and how they roll, entirely unlikely to happen. | |
