James Tony wants Brock first- calls out others

Boxing champ James Toney has been a hot topic for mixed martial arts fans from the moment his recent UFC signing was made official.

What seemed a mere curiosity as Toney followed UFC president Dana White around the country – begging for a shot in the octagon – quickly turned into a potential game-changing acquisition.

But is the UFC supporting a freak show? Or can Toney prove boxing's value in MMA?

And whom exactly is Toney going to fight?

On the newest edition of HDNet's "Inside MMA," the 41-year-old boxer said he doesn't want any pushover; in fact, he'd be comfortable starting with UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

"I want Brock Lesnar," Toney said. "I'm the heavyweight champion of the world vs. the UFC champion. That'd be a hell of a match."

And if Lesnar's not in the cards, Toney said there's a few other guys he wouldn't mind facing.

"Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, or whatever his name is," Toney said. "It doesn't matter. I'm not a sideshow. This is the real deal here."

Does James think if he refers to himself as the heavyweight champion of the world that it somehow makes it true?

Let's see how that works out for Toney? If he doesn't get a KO right away then it is down to the mat and GnP to a TKO. I do like it though. This guy is making his name in the UFC before fighting. He is gonna bring huge numbers in because of his antics and mouth. Big win for UFC.

I give this a huge thumbs up! I just want to see him get thrown to the ground, then beaten half to death by a gorilla!

James Toney holds no relevant HW title and he needed steroids to beat John Ruiz.

He's definitely running his mouth. What a horrible thing this would be for MMA if he KOs a big time UFC HW.

Toney is slow and has a bad style to convert to MMA. Brandon Vera for instance would pick him apart with leg kicks and maul him in the clinch with knees.


I think it is understated how badly a true MMA striker would beat down a boxer in a cage.

This sounds more like Machida.

I have some doubts about any mixed martial artist wanting to stand with Toney, but respect the originality of your opinion. It's just too big of a risk. I do remember Kimbo overwhelming Ray Mercer with a flurry of shots from different levels before they clinched. It worked then, but I just see Toney, an inside puncher if memory serves me right, as a different story.

But then again, if it were all about the hands, then no one would kick, knee or elbow.

Toney's style is so mma unfriendly, as he employs it in boxing, that it is hard to see him at 41 picking up everything it takes not to get KTFO'd by a kick to the head, chopped apart by leg kicks or taken down at will.

He isn't elusive enough, he bobs and weaves around and below punches. He likes to stand, dodge and counter.

The Klitschko brothers are one thing, this is another.

I want James Toney to fight Pat Barry so we can see his legs fly off of his body and land somewhere in the crowd.

I started from boxing but believe its not were it should be and doesnt get the best atheletes anymore
