UFC 171: Lawler vs Hendricks

Matt Brown and DHK haven't beaten anyone in the top 10 to get a title shot.

I just had a dream that Robbie Lawler ko's Hendricks to win the title. Hope it comes true.

I didn't say they aren't contenders. What I said is you have to beat a top 10 guy before you get a title shot.

Brown isn't a contender until he beats someone else in the contender picture. We're not in the dark ages anymore. There is an established hierarchy and it's called a top ten list. Without beating at least one guy on that list you can crack that list given the right circumstanes, but you cannot justifiably be given a title shot. Kim is closer to being a contender with that win over Silva, albeit that was about as big a fluke as I've seen in a long, long time.

But between these two guys they have two meaningful victories in those runs they're on. Pyle and Silva. Pyle is at best a fringe of the top ten kind of guy. One of those 9-15 spot guys. Silva is about in the same boat until he beats someone with a bigger name than Brenneman. Silva has the chops to be a top 6-7 kind of guy if he can just find a way to win when he gets matched up with the DHK's of the world. The Fitch loss doesn't count against him much since Fitch only ever lost twice when a fight went beyond the first round.

That is focusing way too much on numbers and rankings. Skill and production should mean something. What you see happening during a fight not what it looks like on a stat sheet later.

Ludo is correct OU. They have to show those skills against quality guys who have higher skill not against weaker guys. If they could look as good against guys like Rory, Jake or Maia then they can have a shot. First thing the UFC can do is match them up against each other.

I think both are correct, and that the talent gap is not as big as rankings theselves may make it appear. Ww is a premium division in mma, you can collect quality wins off of good performances against more then just the small sample of guys who happen to populate a top ten at a given point in time.  Those guys are not legit to contend for the belt in their next fight, but they are a couple of only a few guys who are really in the greatertitle picture.  Problem is, Wws title picture is the most crowded in the Ufc today.
