Saturday night at WSOF 7, the young organization crowned its first Featherweight champion as Georgi Kakhanyan submitted Lance Palmer in the third round of the headlining fight. TUF 7 veteran Jesse Taylor and one-armed Lightweight Nick Newell also picked up wins on the card. The show closed out the year for the World Series of Fighting with 6 events and they're looking to do even more in 2014.
On Friday, WSOF president Ray Sefo spoke to The Huffington Post on Friday and detailed his plans for the new year which includes international expansion and shows on network television:
"Next year we're gonna have two shows that are gonna be on the mothership of NBC," adds Sefo. "They are starting to promote WSOF on there, which reaches millions of millions of other people that probably don't know much about the sport or have never seen it."
Sefo also spoke about about the promotion's intention to head to Japan for an event in the spring featuring former UFC Middleweight contender Yushin Okami. Additionally, they're looking to hold an event in either Brazil, Mexico or Peru as well.
As reported by MMA Fighting, Sefo said that they will hold 8-10 events in 2014. The first event on NBC should happen in early summer with another to follow on the major network later in the year. The remaining shows will be broadcast on NBCSN with whom WSOF is in the midst of a 3-year contract.
