An intriguing lightweight fight between Bobby Green (19-5 MMA, 4-1 SF) and Jorge Masvidal (23-7 MMA, 5-1 SF) is being targeted for November's "Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir" event.
MMAjunkie.com (
www.mmajunkie.com) has learned that at least one fighter has agreed to the bout, which promotion officials are hoping to lock up for the evening's main card.
Featuring a headliner between Strikeforce grand prix winner Daniel Cormier and former UFC champ Frank Mir, "Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir" takes place Nov. 3 at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. The main card airs on Showtime (10 p.m. ET/PT) following prelims on Showtime Extreme (8 p.m.).
Masvidal is currently 3-1 in his past four fights, and the lone loss in that stretch came in a December 2011 title fight with current Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez, who earned a unanimous-decision win after a 25-minute headlining contest.
Masvidal has since bounced back from the result with a July decision win over Justin Wilcox.
For "King" Green, the bout would represent a long-awaited shot at recognition. Despite boasting an impressive four-fight win streak for the promotion, Green has served as the night's first fight in each of his past two appearances and has been booked on the prelims for each of his five Strikeforce appearances.
Fifteen of Green's 19 career wins have come via stoppage.
With the addition to the card, the current "Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir" card includes:
Daniel Cormier vs.
Frank Mir Champ Luke Rockhold vs. Lorenz Larkin (for middleweight title)
Bobby Green vs. Jorge Masvidal*
Liz Carmouche vs. Sara McMann*
