Will he or won't he?

That's the big question regarding the future of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight standout Nick Diaz, who "retired" after losing a five round unanimous decision to Carlos Condit in the UFC 143 pay-per-view main event back in February.

Not that he had much of a choice.

The wily Stockton slugger was popped for marijuana metabolites following his controversial defeat to "The Natural Born Killer" and despite a valiant effort by his legal team, he was unable to escape the penalty handed down by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Naturally, Diaz is eligible to return when his one year suspension has been served, but will he opt to remain retired from the sport of cagefighting? Or return to make one more run at the 170-pound belt, currently held by Georges St. Pierre?

We're going to find out later today (Fri., July 27, 2012) at 4 p.m. PT.

That's when the Gracie camp "will be posting a statement regarding Nick Diaz's future on graciefighter.com," according to a tweet from his coach and manager, Cesar Gracie, who also said Diaz was only "temporarily retired" during an update just last month.

The former Strikeforce Welterweight Champion was moonlighting as a grappling competitor at the first-ever World Jiu-Jitsu Expo back in May, against esteemed submission legend Braulio Estima, but no-showed the competition after learning his competitor was having trouble making weight.

Just another day at the office for Diaz.

Well Maniacs, today is D-day. Anyone expecting Diaz to return to the ranks of the UFC once his suspension is over? Or will the part-time triathlete call it quits for good? But more importantly, will he even show up for his own announcement?

I'm leaning that Diaz craps on his supporters again and no shows this.

Hopefully Carlos Condit suffers a career ending injury and Nick is able to fight GSP like he should be anyways.

But assuming he returns on schedule, who should he fight? Maybe Mike Peirce or Rick story, I could see Arron Simpson.

Should be much much higher on the food chain then that. He was robbed in the Condit fight and is still ranked in the top 5 at WW. Maybe Fitch or Kampmann.

So because I think Reem should wait because he was caught trying to gain an unfair advantage you now want to be childish and claim this situation is the same and bump Diaz down the list? Because Nick didn't even test positive for marijuana and his camp honestly thought he was clean by commission standards while using a recreational drug he has a prescription for that gives no competitive advantage? That is the same as using steroids? Come on now be for real. It's a completely different situation, anyone and everyone can see that. Weak sauce.

There is no way you can possibly believe this to be true. There are levels of cheating, that's just common sense. That's like saying being caught with possession of less then a gram of marijuana is equal to first degree murder. Breaking the law is breaking the law right? Equal punishment.

Well you're right. After commission revived testimony and considered the presented facts, Diaz was given a stiffer punishment then Overeem. They are not equal. Diaz offense was more serious and he should drop further.

Don't be stupid. You know in the eyes of all the athletes that compete in any combat sport would say that gaining an unfair advantage by using steroids is a far worse offense then testing positive for marijuana metabolites. One of them puts the opponents career in danger by gaining an unfair advantage, the other one doesn't. Looking at it strictly from a competitive stand point, the two aren't even in the same universe.

You see if you were talking about a fighter fighting with elevated level of steroids there is a case that can be made in the direction you are trying to shoot it, since we're not...

I don't think we are capable of having an honest conversation about this. I have zero respect for the argument you are trying to make and I don't think you are being honest here. Reem had extremely elevated testosterone levels but since he wasn't in competition you somehow think it's irrelevant and that is not an opinion I can have any respect for.

I don't think your desire to see a fight should trump what is clearly right and wrong. That is exactly what you are doing. I have no idea why you continue to give Reem a free pass like he did absolutely nothing.

He broke the rules and the body responsible for interpreting those rules and taking action against those in violation of them took a motion which I find acceptable based on my evaluation of the presented evidence. So why don't you regain some composure with all this you don't respect me because you think I'm stupid crap and begin thinking analytically about all some of this. Implying my stance is formed from bias I harbor is another assumption which is incorrect.

Diaz should get a difficult fight against somebody who isn't a big name when he comes back. The UFC sucked his dick while he acted like a dumbass, then he lost, then he was suspended for a year.

Bias is the only logical reason I could see for anyone claiming that elevated testosterone levels in a combat sport is comparable to marijuana in the system. It's a debate I can't even take seriously. IMO fighters caught with extreme testosterone levels that compete in combat sport should be subject to arrest and jail time. It's a very real problem. It's dangerous for everyone involved.

Yeah of course you guys who hate Diaz had no problem with the fight. Condit getting the nod for that performance is bad for the sport and if that is what is going to qualify as someone winning a fight, I'll just stop watching MMA. It was a pathetic decision. Condit literally turned around and ran multiple times every round. He refused to fight, it wasn't clever defense it was refusing to fight. Nick tried his best to force him to fight, but Condit wanted no part of it. That kind of performance should not be rewarded and if so many people didn't have it out for Diaz it would have been an outrage. There is still a very good % of people who watched that fight and thought Nick won and are just as adamant about it. There is a reason Carlos lost the respect or many fighters and fans that night.
