Alvarez to fulfill Bellator Contract: Fights Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire in October

Jul 25, 2012 - Eddie Alvarez will fight at least one more time in Bellator.

The former Bellator lightweight champion has agreed to fight for the
promotion on Oct. 15, which will fulfill the final fight on his current
contract. Alvarez confirmed the news with MMAFighting.com on Wednesday.

According to Alvarez, his opponent has yet to be signed. The fight will
take place Caesars Windsor Hotel & Casino in Windsor, Ontario,
Canada. The promotion is expected to announce his opponent and the fight
in the coming days.

Following the fight, Alvarez will
officially become a free agent. Bellator will have the right to match
any offer he receives from another organization within three months
after the fight takes place. If they don't, he will be free to sign
wherever he chooses. Alvarez said he will focus on training and winning
this upcoming fight and then deal with his next contract afterwards.

Alvarez (23-3) got back on the winning track in April when he defeated Shinya Aoki at Bellator 66 via first-round TKO. He has been a member of Bellator since Bellator 1 in April 2009.

Too bad it won't be against Hawn or Chandler. I'd like to see him fight either one of those guys. Wonder who he will fight?

Patricky Freire would be a good one.

If it's Bellator guys, Freire, Woodward, then Weedman would be my preference. Even though he is old as dust, Antonio McKee is not a bad choice for a fight here. He is still arguably a top 25 lightweight. His only loss in the past 9 years is a close split decision to Vokelman last year.

Eddie Alvarez‘s days with Bellator Fighting Championship may be coming to a close, but if that’s the case he’s certainly going out with a bang.

The former Bellator lightweight champion, who is currently on the last fight of his current contract with the promotion, now has a bout scheduled coming up on Oct 12 at Caesar’s Windsor in Canada.

Alvarez is expected to face fellow lightweight Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire in a featured bout on the upcoming Bellator card headed to Canada.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney announced the fight via Twitter on Monday.

Alvarez lost his Bellator title in a ‘Fight of the Year’ candidate against Michael Chandler in 2011 before bouncing back by drubbing former Dream lightweight champion Shinya Aoki in April.

It’s been reported numerous times over the last several months that Alvarez only has one fight left on his current Bellator deal before becoming a free agent.

Facing Alvarez in Canada will be heavy hitting Brazilian Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire.

Freire is known for his vicious striking and aggressive style, but he’ll be looking to rebound against Alvarez after going just 1-2 in his last three fights.

The card featuring Alvarez vs. Pitbull will take place on Oct 12 at the Caesar’s Windsor in Canada and will be shown in the United States via MTV2 and Spike.com.

The question is will he go straight to the UFC or will Zuffa bring him to Strikeforce for Gil ?

Sick fight. EA should take it but Patricky brings the noise.

We have a stacked 155 division. I'm thrilled with what Sam and our team have done.
