Subject: Dissecting the Bellator Featherweight Tournament Thu Mar 08, 2012 1:20 am
Ok, I have to admit, over the past few years I have become a much bigger fan of the lower weight classes than the bigger ones. That said I am excited to be able to watch Bellator again so this featherweight tournament has my attention. It honestly has some good looking prospectsm so lets take a look.
Genair Da Silva (11-4, 1-1 in Bellator) vs Alexandre Bezerra (12-1, 4-0 in Bellator) - Bezerra has looked impressive scoring 4 stoppages in his 4 Bellator fights, 1 tko and 3 submissions, all 3 submissions were different (RNC, Heel, triangle). He looks good. He is fighting Junior PQD who fought Marlon Sandro last season in Bellator and lost a split decision to the top rated vet. This is a good fight and I have a hard time picking a winner, I think this is great match making and should make for a good t.v. fight. Outcome : I like Da Silva but I think Bezerra is a damn good fighter, Bazerra's lone loss came to "Da Bronx" Oliverea in 2009. I think Bezerra will have to gut out a decision. THis is a great first round match up.
Marlon Sandro (20-3, 3-1 in Bellator) vs Robert Vargas (12-1, 1-1 in Bellator) - Sandro is one of the top men in the division and has only lost to the best in the division (in Hioki, Curran and the Omigawa who was on Cinderella run). Sandro is 3-2 in has last 5 fights but he is still clearly a top level fighter in the division. Vargas is fighting in belabor for the first time in 3 years, he is competent on the ground and has ok striking but even at the Shark Fights level of competition he has had many decisions. Vargas does not seem to be a big threat. Outcome: Personally I don't see any way that Sandro loses this, more than likely he will pick Vargas apart with his superior standup.
Ronnie Mann (21-4-1, 3-1 in Bellator) vs Mike Corey (11-2-1, 0-0-1 in Bellator) - The Englander Ronnie Mann is a tough fighter who has been fighting since 2004 and is well versed in submission and the ground game. His only loss in Bellator came against Pat Curran via decision. He is 8-2 in his last 10 fights, spanning a 4 year period. The 2 losses were to Pat Curran and Hatsu Hioki. Mike Corey is pretty big for a featherweight (he is 5'9) and is 9-1-1 in his last 10 fights. His last fight was a draw against Horodecki. Outcome: I think that Ronnie Mann will have to fight smart and if he does, he should come away with a victory here.
Daniel Strauss (17-4, 3-1 in Bellator) vs Jeremy Spoon (12-0, 2-0 in Bellator) - Strauss is 14-1 in his last 15 fights, his loss came against Pitbull Freire in last years Bellator tournament. He has also lost to Pat Curran. Spoon is 12-0 against 12 names you have never heard of but he has 8 submission (some to punches). Outcome : Strauss has been in verse top level competition while this is Spoons first real big test imo. I think Strauss will win.
Bellator Featherweight TItle Fight Joe Warren (7-2, 5-1 in Belaltor) vs Pat Curran (16-4, 6-1 in Bellator) - Joe Warren has returned to defend his 145 pound title after his drop to Bantamweight (135) did not go as planned (he had his first Bellator loss). Curran on the other hand, tore through last season 145 point tournament defeating Palomino, Ronnie Mann and then knocking out Marlon Sandro with a sick head kick. His only loss in Bellator came against Eddie Alvarez. Curran also has Bellator wins over Roger Huerta and Toby Imada. Joe Warren is undefeated at 145 in Bellator and burst onto the scene in the Dream Grand Prix. He will hope to control Curran with wrestling and hopefully weight won't be a problem (I doubt it will). Curran has great stand up and can go with the flight anywhere while Warren needs to employ his game plan. Outcome: I think this is a great match up, extremely close. Warren has to get this fight to the ground in my opinion because I think Curran can make him pay standing. Pat Curran wins the title.

Nice write up. Can't wait until Friday. It's all Bellator for the next month.
I got Popo, Sandro, Corey, and Straus
Leaning Warren in the title fight. It seems just like him to win a fight he is favored to lose with people treating him like a joke the past year since his poor performance vs. Galvao and then getting destroyed by Vila. I hope Curran wins though.

I just don't think Warren can implement his wrestling consistently enough over 5 rounds to have a chance here. He's never shown anything but lackluster striking defense and Curran has shown to be a finisher at FW. If Joe gets cracked like he normally does its not going to be a good night
For the tourney, I got Sandro, PoPo, Mann, and Strauss. I really wish Bellator would set up a bracket instead of just randomly making 2nd round matchups though.

No doubt imo Curran is gonna win unless somehow Joe made some leaps in his standup skill.

Well, this sucks
Da Silva missed weight by a few pounds and is replaced by Kenny Foster. While i appreciate that they don't allow that for their tournaments..it sucks because Foster has lost like 3 fights in a row and Da Silva/PoPo was the tournament semi bout i was most looking forward to.
