After earlier this week announcing standout Georgi Karakhanyan for its season-two featherweight tournament, Bellator Fighting Championships today confirmed another quality addition to the eight-man field: undefeated Canadian William Romero.
The 27-year-old boasts a perfect 5-0 record since turning pro in June 2008.
Bellator's season-two tournaments kicks off in April and airs live on FOX Sports Net affiliates.
Highlights packages also air on NBC and Telemundo. The season-two tourney winners fight for the right to fight the season-one winners, who were also crowned promotional champs. Undefeated Joe Soto earned the featherweight belt in 2009 and now awaits a challenger.
Romero, a native Canadian who spent a large chunk of his childhood living in Ecuador, served a paratrooper in the Canadian Armed Forces. However, after his military service, he hooked up with Randy Grant, the brother of UFC fighter T.J. Grant and a prominent MMA trainer.
"I quickly found out that MMA is my calling," stated Romero, who now lives just outside Toronto and trains in Stoney Creek, Ontario. "It's what I was born to do."
Romero has spent his entire pro career in Canada competing for organizations such as the Iroquois MMA Championships and XMMA. Most recently, he topped Guillaume Lamarche (5-2) via 17-second knockout.
Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney is scheduled to announce additional tournament participants over the next few weeks.
