In some huge news from the American regional MMA scene, famed grappler Robert Drysdale has chosen to sign with Houston-based Legacy Fighting Championship as his new home for MMA. Drysdale is one of the most recognizable names in grappling circles, but has remained a relative unknown to MMA fans because of his lack of exposure.

He was expected to be a cast member of The Ultimate Fighter but the required medicals revealed that Drysdale was living with a brain aneurysm.Once he resolved this incredibly dangerous medical issue, he started his professional MMA career in the Canadian-based AFC, where he submitted three straight opponents in just over five minutes, collectively.

Last night, Bloody Elbow learned from Legacy FC that Drysdale had signed a three-fight contract and is set to make his debut for the promotion on May 11th at the Houston Arena Theater in Houston, Texas. He currently is without an opponent. This is a major signing for a promotion that is trying to build a reputation as the top fight league in Texas. Drysdale adds legitimacy due to his grappling credentials which should increase not just the visibility but also the marketability of the overall Legacy product.

Legacy Fighting Championship airs on HDNet. Their next show is February 24th at the Houston Arena Theater. The card features Gerald Harris in a middleweight fight against Artenas Lewis and Chidi Njokuani making his Legacy debut against Jon Harris.

The Texas-based Legacy Fighting Championships has signed a new deal with HDNet.

Legacy, which also hosts untelevised amateur events, plans up to 10 pro events in 2013. All will air on HDNet.

Legacy recently has sent some of its top fighters to major promotions. For example, middleweight champ Andrew Craig recently upset Kyle Noke at UFC on FX 2, and featherweight/lightweight champ Daniel Pineda signed with the UFC and submitted Pat Schilling at UFC on FX 1 earlier this year.

A highly anticipated middleweight bout world-class grappler Robert Drysdale (3-0) and Isaac "Ike" Villanueva (8-6) has been pulled from this month's Legacy Fighting Championships 11 event.

Drysdale today announced the news on MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio), and Legacy promoter Mick Maynard confirmed the scratch.

However, Maynard said the fight likely will be part of July's Legacy Fighting 12 card.

Legacy Fighting Championship 11 takes place May 11 at Houston's Arena Theater, and the main card airs on HDNet. Legacy 12 takes place July 13, also in Houston.

According to Dysdale, an injury has slowed his training camp for the fight, which is his first in MMA since June 2011. He didn't want to discuss the nature of it.

"I can train, but I just can't train the way I've wanted to," said Drysdale, who said he's operating at about 70 percent.

Drysdale is a multiple-time jiu-jitsu world champion who made his pro MMA debut in 2010. He since has posted three first-round submission victories. Most recently, he choked out former UFC fighter Mike Nickels in 64 seconds at an Armageddon Fighting Championships event in Canada. In addition to his own career, Drysdale has been a central figure in the training of notables such as Forrest Griffin, Martin Kampmann, Evan Dunham and Frank Mir.

Villanueva recently saw a 5-1 streak spoiled by back-to-back losses, including one to Larry Crowe at Legacy 8. With six knockouts in eight career wins, he'll likely put his striking skills up against Drysale's renowned ground game.

Maynard said Villanueva could get a different opponent for Legacy 11, though the Drysdale fight likely will remain intact for Legacy 12.

Recent Bellator title challenger Jay Hieron (22-5) is headed to Legacy Fighting Championships.

LFC promoter Mick Maynard today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) the fighter – who's also competed with the UFC, Strikeforce, WEC and IFL – has verbally agreed to a three-fight deal with the promotion.

The 35-year-old Hieron is expected to make his promotional debut at Legacy Fighting Championships 12, which airs live on HDNet on July 13.

Matt "Danger" Schnell has an opponent for his pro debut.

The fighter, who's perhaps best known for his stint on MTV's "Caged" docu-drama series, will take on fellow newcomer Ryan Hollis in a flyweight bout at Legacy Fighting Championship 14, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed with promoter Mick Maynard.

The event airs Sept. 14 on HDNet from Houston's Arena Theater.

Schnell vs. Hollis will be part of the night's main-card broadcast.

Legacy FC officials recently announced the signing of Schnell to a pro contract.

Schnell, who recently signed with First Round Management (a firm that also represents UFC champions Jon Jones, Carlos Condit and Benson Henderson, among others), was the breakout star of the "Caged" series, which followed Louisiana's amateur-MMA scene. While posting a 10-2 amateur record, Schnell got a bit of a boost when UFC veteran and recent headliner Dustin Poirier raved about him following a training session together.

He now takes on the Texas-based Hollis, a 23-year-old who's posted a 4-1 amateur record in sanctioned bouts ahead of his pro debut. The past three wins have come via stoppage, including a Cage Combat title win over James DeHerrera this past month. Many of the Hard Head Hitters team member's other fights came in Legacy's amateur series.

Anyone watch the event over the weekend? Main event didn't happen, I think it was Robichaux that had a problem cutting weight and they said something about his liver. So fight was moved to the next event. I want to see Drysdale get a step up in competition. Looks like he will stay with Legacy awhile, alot of the fighters had good things to say about the organization.
The Hieron finish was BS. I don't know what the ref was thinking. Hieron had a choke and told the ref that the guy was out. But then the ref checked to see if the fighter went limp. He did not, he in fact gave a thumbs up. But the ref stopped it anyways? Horrible reffing.

I watched. The Heiron call was bad.

IMO, when a guy wins like that, anything other than saying, "let's do this again and let's do this right" is some lameness.

Silva was looking decent against Jay and gave a hard to miss thumbs up when the ref grabbed his hand to check if he was conscious.

Can't you get DQ'd for telling the ref someone is out when they clearly aren't?

A solid lineup, including an eight-fight main card, is set for next month's Legacy Fighting Championship 14 event.

The card includes a welterweight title fight between welterweight champion Jorge "Macaco" Patino (27-13-1) and challenger Jeff Rexroad (5-1).

Additionally, NCAA Division I national wrestling champion Darrion Caldwell and MTV "Caged" star Matt "Danger" Schnell make their pro debuts in separate bouts.

Legacy FC 14 takes place Sept. 14 at Houston's Arena Theater, and the main card airs on AXS TV (formerly HDNet).

Patino, who also holds Legacy's lightweight title, has won four straight fights, which included a title win over Pete Spratt and a defense over Mike Bronzoulis. He meets Rexroad, who's fought exclusively for Legacy during his two-year career and current four-fight win streak.

Caldwell (0-0), meanwhile, was a three-time state high-school champion, and he won the 2009 NCAA Division I national wrestling championship at 149 pounds after he upset Hodge Trophy winner Brent Metcalf in the finals. He meets fellow featherweight Nate Garza (3-5), who looks to end a three-fight losing skid following recent Legacy losses to Angel Huerta and Cody Williams.

Schnell (0-0), who quickly emerged as the most promising prospect on the MMA-themed "Caged" docu-reality series, turns pro after a 10-2 run as an amateur when he meets fellow new pro and flyweight Ryan Hollis (0-0), a Texas-based fighter who went 4-1 as an amateur.

Other main-card bouts include flyweight prospect and Tachi Palace Fights veteran Dustin Ortiz (8-2) vs. undefeated New Mexico fighter Rafael de Freitas (5-0), as well as undefeated light heavyweight Justin Ledet (4-0) vs. veteran Matt Thompson (17-9), who's on an 8-1 run that included a recent submission victory over former UFC competitor Jake Rosholt.
