| http://mmajunkie.com/news/25578/despite-claiming-two-rounds-florian-settles-for-draw-against-ufc-champ-aldo.mmaHOUSTON – For the first time in the history of the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, soccer kicks were allowed in the UFC's octagon. UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian went toe-to-toe in the cage on Thursday afternoon, and while Florian was declared the winner in rounds one and three of the competition, UFC officials stepped in and declared the contest a draw. Of course, this was no MMA competition. Instead, Aldo, Florian and the UFC paired with Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo for a little friendly soccer "kick-up" contest to help promote this weekend's UFC 136 event in the soccer club's home city. It took place at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Aldo reached the semiprofessional level playing soccer in his native Brazil. Florian made it to the collegiate level in the U.S. and played for Division I Boston University. Both fighters were good sports – despite being in the middle of cutting weight for their Saturday's co-feature contest at Houston's Toyota Center. Florian jumped out to the early lead by using only his feet, knees and head to score 17 consecutive touches on the soccer ball before it hit the ground. Aldo answered with just 10 touches. Both fighters adjusted their plans in the second frame and favored a strategy of keeping the ball very low and playing just with their feet. Aldo took the round, 23 touches to 12. In the final round, Florian put on the best performance of the night with 42 touches. Aldo answered back with his best output and netted 28 consecutive strikes. And while Florian's performance should have earned him the win, UFC official Dave Sholler intervened and ruled the friendly competition a draw – to be settled at Saturday's pay-per-view event. Houston Dynamo players Bobby Boswell, Geoff Cameron and Corey Ashe were on hand to witness the festivities. The Houston Dynamo, which is currently in fifth place in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference, were founded in 2005. The team earned back-to-back MLS Cup titles in 2006 and 2007. | It's like the Jardine-Mousasi draw...but that I mean it wasn't really a draw. | |

| Yeah, I think so Freak! He knows this is his last chance to win the belt. But regardless, the UFC has plans for Florian in the future. | |

| This was his best chance to beat Aldo. But the World refuses to allow Kenny to win any title so it was declared a draw. | |

In Pickems I took Aldo just for the strategy because I'm going for the title. In GOR I took Florian. |

| My bad, didn't realize there was strategy involved in pickems instead of just choosing who you think is going to win the fight | |

| Should be Aldo's toughest fight to date...outside of the obvious Luiz Azevedo
Florian is long enough and skilled enough in the striking game not to be a punching bag. I pick Aldo because he's the more skilled striker and in my opinion a more skilled grappler as well...but it won't be a Faber slaughter by any means.
I think Faber is a more talented fighter than Florian but matchups make fights and Faber was too small and stubby compared to Aldo and he was unable to take Aldo down. | |
