| Guida Diaz was the classic, striker beating on wrestler, but wrestler gets a takedown, does nothing from top position and gets the V. And Diaz had some extended flurries in that fight.
As far as me being testy. Im just countering arguments, don't take it to heart.

| I would not go so far as to call Maynard an exciting boxer or even an above average boxer relative to what are considered good MMA strikers. He's a headhunter that has the threat of the takedown and wrestle fuck to make more skilled strikers be cautious with him..which plays into Maynards striking ability. Huerta was a guy who tried to go balls out striking with Maynard and that is when Maynard goes for the takedown. Florian was an example of a guy who was afraid to even strike with Maynard because of the takedown, even though Florian is a better more dynamic striker...i think Maynard would have outstruck him simply because Florian was thinking takedown takedown takedown..kind of like how Sonnen was able to get to Silva in the stand up a couple times because of the takedown. Nate Diaz was different, i'm not sure he was afraid of the takedown and i don't think Maynard wanted to take him down..i just don't think he's that good of a stiker.
Gray's a better boxer than most of his breed, but it all comes back to his wrestling. If Maynard didnt have the threat of the takedown and the reputation of being able to keep somebody down and lay down some good GnP...his boxing would not be that effective.

| Maynard has epic head movement and footwork and is of one of the best LW boxers. Penn and Diaz have striking that strongly benefit from opponents also not wanting to go to the ground. They can do shit that gets typical fighters taken down because many of their opponents want to avoid the ground game with them. This is MMA. Skill sets tie into each other. The way maynard moves though is still high level.

Pettis wasn't really over hyped. Guida is just that much better at employing his game plan. Guida would keep Florian's shoulders on the mat for three rounds if they were to ever rematch - trust. I think Guida would have been able to keep Florian's shoulders on the mat back then to...he just didnt go for it. He'd probably still lose to Diego Sanchez. I'd be intrigued by a Diego Guida rematch. Man Guida was a journeyman in that fight but against champions in his last two performances he looks like a contender.

| Even though his overall strategy remains the same, Guida has become a much different fighter. He'll lose the reputation of being an exciting fighter, but he was .500 fighter when he fought like that anyway | |

Honestly, Gray and Frankie don't run that game plan nor do they train the way Clay trains, so Showtime would have a possibly better chance against them than Clay due to the matchups.

Oh man. My post on BE ; - Quote :

This may be a bit reactionary to tonight’s fight, and people will knee jerk wha wha whaaat?, as would I a few short hours ago, but hold on for a second and hear me out. I say this because Clay doesn’t spend all his waking hours learning boxing footwork like Maynard does. It showed in the second Edgar fight when Maynard and Edgar wrestled fairly equally where in the first fight Maynard easily won the wrestling. Guida on the other hand makes wrestling his bread and butter and molds everything around it. It really showed tonight with Pettis. Pettis has athletic hips and good takedown defense demonstrated in many fights but every time he attempted a strike, BOOM, Clay had him down. You can tell that is what Clay trains more than anything else.
Other top wrestlers in the UFC work on other aspects of their game much more. But like Clay said before the bout he knows his strengths and will play into them. ,
I stand by this. Maynard's wrestling has not been as dominant lately and it's because he has turned into one of the best boxers at LW. You don't add a skill set to that degree without sacrificing something somewhere. Guida on the other hand has upgraded his takedowns and control in a big way and trains his movement and footwork to set up his takedowns. It is all based around takedowns. Maynard is not. He is a boxer with a wrestling pedigree. We've seen before where guys lose some of their pedigreed dominance by taking for granted their root skills at this level. Wait that was you? I was totally randomly reading thoughts on the fight that would be crazy if it was your post, thought I remember it being a couple sentence post only though, and don't know anyone on there. But still not on board with that thought whoever it was.

My exact thoughts on the fight and I just finished watching it. Pettis is still one bad dude. He needs to work on his TD defense more. He will fight for a title imo. Dude is sick in every other way.

| Too be fair I was also wrong about the fight. When it came down to it I pussied out and changed my pick to Pettis. I also said I was positive this fight would be 29-28 for whoever won. I didn't see the fight going any other way. But it was still a competitive 30-27 and I wasn't that far off, nothing like you Wolf | |

Castillo in the WEC who is now a UFC fighter with a win over Joe Stevenson, Shane Roller and Ben Henderson. And all of these fighters have proven themselves UFC worthy with wins over long time UFC LW's. Guida will struggle to get him down and will have no answer for the speed of Pettis.
Pettis will dominate him. - Wolfgangsta wrote:

think that the wrestlefuck game plan is going to play here. Not on no Showtime.Matter of fact Guida's stock right now is as high as it has ever been with that Gomi win. It's too high. Pettis is a contender. Guida is a gate keeper. People are confusing Guida with a contender at the moment. I love me some Clay but he is bouts to get next leveled here. - Wolfgangsta wrote:
