Who's the greatest actor never to win an Oscar ?

I am talking about real high class actors who've been in the business for a couple decades.

Martin Sheen????????????? The guy's a TV mediocrity.

Peter O'Toole is a pretty doggone good choice. He was GREAT in Lion in Winter.

Has Johnny Depp been around long enough to qualify? The roles are quirky but I think the guy's terriffic.

Has Ed Harris ever won?

As far as character actors go how about Burgess Meredith or Albert Finney?

Ed Harris is a good call, he's a very underrated actor.

I suppose Depp qualifies since he's now acting in his third decade.

Sheen was fantastic in Badlands,Wall Street and Apocalypse Now.

REALLY? I thought he got blown off the screen in Wall Street by his son and Douglas and the same thing happened anytime he shared a screen in Apocolypse.

Course as you know Martin Scorcese is only OK

Nope.He never won one.He was one of my favorites,and one of his best roles was in The Friends of Eddie Coyle.

I could go O'toole for this question. If Depp counts then it's not easy.

The question is tough because it only takes one great performance to win the Oscar. There are a lot of people who have acted truly great a few or even a handful of times while not winning. A cyclical award deal like the Oscars doesn't tell a complete story for these guys I think. The Oscars have had several notable one time winners who have won off of their one, maybe two deserving performances in their careers. THere are some years with 5 outstanding performances and other where you wonder why half of them were nominated.

Does Dean really count ? who's to say he wouldn't have won an Oscar if not for the tragic accident.

Dicaprio ??? as much as I've grown to respect Leo the man I wouldn't say he's had a true great stand out performance that's warranted an Oscar.

He was awesome in Blood Diamond, Inception and Body of Lies.

Leo has had a bunch of movies that were awesome.

Wasn't a fan in the 90's but in my opinion he was the actor of the 00's.

I am not saying Leo's not been involved in good movies because he's been in many, but can we really say his performances should have won him an Oscar ?

He's been up for one 3 times. Aviator, Blood Diamond, Whats Eating Gilbert Grape..then you got Shutter Island probably getting consideration in the upcoming oscars.

I just think when you been up for it 3 times, even if there was always somebody better you are eligible for a thread like this.

How about Albert Finney?

He was up for best actor and best supporting actor a bajillion times over 4-5 decades and never won shit.
