TapouT sold to billionare Warren Buffett?

MMA’s top clothing brand TapouT has been synonymous with the sport for over 10 years, but their future could hold many changes. Sources close to TapouT have told MMAPrime.TV that the company will soon announce that they are sold or being sold and that sales representatives have already been let go from the clothing company’s headquarters. The source also stated that the new buyer is possibly none other than reputed billionaire Warren Buffett.

Details of the purchase such as how much the company was bought for are not yet available at this time. Also, the current status of the remaining members is unclear, though we hope to have more information regarding all facets of this story as it comes to us.

The brand will decline as it becomes a Walmartian symbol, ala the Iron Cross and the OC/west coast chopper craze of the last ten or so years, and the brains behind the company will open a new brand that will become trendy with grassroots fighters.

The heart of that company died with Mask. RIP Tapout.

The tapout gang has been in normal clothes increasingly since then.

I think Tapout is in a form of decline already. Maybe not fiscally yet but, the brand is diluting.

Silver Star will be the new fad

I think Silver Star shirts are fugly. They are like Affliction shirts only more tacky...and thats hard to do.

Tapout has always been kind of boring to me. I own a tapout shirt but it's the original tapout shirt..they have yet to put out anything since then that looked good.

Once rivals, TapouT, Silver Star Casting Co., and Hitman Fight Gear are now on the same team.

Bloomberg on Monday night reported that the three key mixed martial arts clothing brands have been purchased by business man Jamie Salter, who is also known for having snapped up such name brands as Linens ’n Things Inc., Polaroid Corp., and others.

Salter is reportedly putting the three brands together under his Toronto-based company Authentic Brands Group LLC.

“These are some of the most exciting brands I’ve seen in years,” Salter told Bloomberg. “The popularity of mixed martial arts and the UFC is soaring around the world. The last time I saw a sport with this much potential was 20 years ago with snowboarding.”

TapouT has the furthest reach into the mainstream of the three companies purchased, accounting for sales of more than $200 million dollars last year.

TapouT president Dan “Punkass” Caldwell told Bloomberg that there had been no shortage of buyers, but went with Salter because he welcomes the continued involvement of Caldwell and his partner, Tim "SkySkrape" Katz.

Caldwell and Charles “Mask” Lewis founded TapouT in 1997, selling t-shirts out of the back of their car.

Lewis died in a high-speed car crash on March 11, 2009.
