WOW New Civil War Numbers

so the numbers for the death toll in the Civil War have long stood at somewhere arena 680,000 people died during the war, after years of studying census' during the time period, the new official estimate is that at least 750,000 americans died in the war.

That is more than the amount of americans that died in World War 1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan Wars combined.

Crazy stuff.

Well when the war is Americans vs Americans, only makes since that would be the record.

Also that was a long ass war. So overtime when the entire war is Americans killing Americans, those numbers are going to stack up.

it was actually a pretty short war, being only 4 and a half years long. but battles back then were MUCH different than todays war, or even ww1!

the fact that it was american vs american and the fact that they were using new weapon technology (mini ball) mixed with old tactics = deadliest war in our history.

The war was only 4 years though, so shorter then Vietnam, Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Personally I think we should count the americans as whoever fought on the northern side, if you died a southerner in battle lets call it what it was, they where confederates, they weren't americans. They were trying to leave america.

The real kicker was the invention of the minie ball, in the old days if you got shot and the ball hit your bone, it broke your bone, with the mini ball, it shattered your bone completely. Hence all the amputations and deaths from non critical wounds. Albert Sydney Johnston literally died from getting shot in the foot and not realizing it.

This was the last war that america fought using outdated tactics. You could argue Vietnam because we performed so poorly in urban combat but can't really claim Napalm and Agent Orange was an outdid tactic lol

4 years but both sides were American so that is equal to a 8 year war. I win.

Battles in CIvil War were crazy, starting with Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, Wilderness, etc. Was just nuts how they fought back then, add in with the best cannons, Gettysburg is the most explosives ever used on american soil, crazy to think about.

Nobody was talking about disease, talking about war, genocide, including when disease was used as a tool of that.

IDK, just don't see a comparison between a nation in a civil war fighting a war versus, Spain, British Crown, Dutch, French, and other countries arriving coinciding with the disappearance of over 80 million people in 130 years. Big difference between the two, but I get what your saying as far as difference in mass of numbers.

I think its interesting that the last Confederate general to surrender was Brig. General Stand Wattie of the Cherokee Nation, he was the only indian General in the Confederacy and was a big slave owner.
