Cesar Gracie - If Nick Diaz Finishes B.J. Penn, He Should Get GSP Next

Cesar Gracie might get more mic time than any manager in MMA, and he was at it again today as a guest on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. Back when Georges St. Pierre was forced off the card with a knee injury, Dana White stated that Carlos Condit would definitely get the next shot and not lose his place in line. Well, Gracie thinks a great performance from Nick Diaz at UFC 137 against B.J. Penn might change that:

"This is the UFC so there's always that chance," Gracie said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "There's no question about it that I will ask for that if Nick has a tremendous performance and he can finish BJ, I would ask for that. But the biggest thing is if the fans want it. If the fans all ask for that, Dana [White] is a smart guy. He knows the sport is about the fans. So who knows?"

Gracie also confirmed there was some reluctance from both guys about facing each other due to their friendship, but a talk between Gracie and JD Penn got things moving:

"We said, 'Hey, you know what? These guys are going to have to fight in the future, at some point in their lives. So let's just get it over with,'" Gracie said.

If Diaz did finish Penn, Gracie would have a point. I believe that there would be a much stronger market for the GSP/Diaz fight than GSP/Condit if that did happen. But that's a big if. There's an angry Hawaiian guy standing between Cesar Gracie and his hopes and dreams, and we'll find out this Saturday whether any of this becomes important or not.

If Nick finishes BJ he should get in line right behind Condit. Lets not forget it was Nick himself who set this all in motion in the first place. Carlos shouldn't lose his shot when he stepped up after nobody could find Nick and after he missed multiple pressers regardless of whether Nick looks good on saturday.

gracie should be smart enough to know he has a nimwit in a fighter and he is responsible just as much as nick himself for making sure nick does everything so he can get in the cage and make them all a payday.

Dude he was already the number 1 contender. He lost that cause he didnt show up to some press conferences, not because he lost a fight or something like that. Now he fights 1 of the best fighters of all time and if he finishes him I think he would at least have a beef to say he deserves the shot. He wont get it over Condit but he at least can say he should.

Condit gets the next shot no matter what happens in Diaz vs Penn.

He wasn't the number one contender. He was the Strikeforce Champion with a reason to pretty much unify the two Zuffa titles. His status in Strikeforce and run since his last fight in the UFC coupled with the fact that GSP has cleaned house are the only reasons Diaz was even considered for this fight, and it has alot more to do with GSP beating everyone else in the top 8 besides Condit and Diaz. Again, Nick was not the number one contender, he was a fresh face.

Agreed. I don't have Nick in the top 5 WW.

He was getting a title shot which would mean number 1 contender in my opinion, deserved or not.

If Nick wins in spectacular fashion I'd be fine with it, but he's got a habit of not playing the PR game so he'll probably have to wait behind Condit.

Condit would beat Nick's ass imo. Let's just have them fight if he beats BJ and earn a title shot. If GSP has to sit longer then he is thinking I can see Dana making them fight. I wonder what Gracie would say then? Earn that shot Nick! Beating BJ Penn doesn't warrant a title shot imo. BJ has beaten Matt Hughes but other then that he hasn't done dick in the WW division. He is a big name and that's it. I am a huge BJ fan but a win over him should not mean that Nick should get an automatic title shot. Ceasar Gracie should just keep his mouth shut. Especially after what Nick did to lose his title shot. I think he has more then a win over BJ to ensure a title shot.

Condit vs Nick is ultimately the fight that I want to see the most

BJ is my favorite fighter and it seems that this fight maybe able to get him into the title picture.

BJ doesn't inspire confidence anymore, if there's one fight it would be a mistake to be half arsed in training for it would be this one and it would not suprise me a bit if diaz outworked him.

personally, i think he'll have to be on his game to win this one. if he's complacent or a bit flabby round the waist it will cost him.

Of course it does, if BJ beats Nick I think BJ should get another shot a greaseboy after Condit. Or at the very least BJ should have to fight fitch again for the title shot, but either way yeah winning this fight def puts him in the title pic.
