Can't believe so few haven't seen The Sopranos, it's the show that paved the way for most of your favorite shows.

| Oz was before the Sopranos, but Oz was never the show the Sopranos was. It never showed us the human side of organized crime. It didn't show us the family man alter ego of a crime lord or the pitfalls of the human condition and how it's tied into that whole concept. Sopranos was a ground breaking show in the regard that it created an avenue where you can not only relate to the "bad guy" but even cheer for him in some cases. | |

| If Deadwood wouldn't have had such a horrible ending it would be up there with all of the shows mentioned in this thread. That show was the shit! | |

The Sopranos was better imo also but Oz was another great HBO show. | |

And Sopranos not only showed the human element, but focused on it for large chunks. TV is so desperate for viewers that they are rarely willing to slow down. Sopranos was willing, and good enough, to do so. | |

Deadwood never had an ending, HBO choose not to continue it. Even with just three seasons Deadwood cracks the top ten for me. |
