Brendan Schaub Believes a Win Over Nogueira Will Make Him Number One Contender

UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub spent a while campaigning for a fight with former Pride and UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 134, and Nogueira accepted. While a win over Big Nog would certainly be huge for his career, Schaub might be a little bit off with what he thinks he'll get out of a win - namely, the number one contender's spot at heavyweight. In a video interview with MMA30.tv, he discusses the fight:

It's the toughest test of my career. Nogueira's as tough as they come, I think he's the toughest heavyweight in the division. A win over him puts me right in the number one contender's spot and I'm looking forward to the challenge.

I'm a huge Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fan, but a guy that's been out for over a year and had three surgeries is the toughest man in the heavyweight division? And beating him puts him ahead of, say, Junior dos Santos? I know that it's just fight promotion and he's being respectful and all, but still.

He also addresses possibly fighting teammate Shane Carwin:

It happens. There's nothing we can do to control it. If it were to happen, it'd only be for a title shot situation, and it'd have to a be a fight that changed both our lives, so man, I'll deal with it when the time comes, but I'm concerned about Big Nog right now.

He is nowhere near the number 1 contender.

He must think this is 2005 or something because beating Mirko Cro Cop and Minotauro don't make you number one contender or anything close to it right now in 2011. Even if he did get to number one contendership he'd get wrecked by Cain or Dos Santos and he'd probably get smashed by Carwin as well. Despite getting beaten to shit by Dos Santos Carwin DID manage to land a couple good shots in there, who knows if Schaub could bounce back from those.

Schaub should be Brock's comeback fight if/when he beats Nog

One thing everyone here ignores - after JDS who IS the number 1 contender? Schaub would be about the best you could do at this point. Only two of the big four remain in contention with Carwin off two losses and one awful loss against Dos Santos. Lesnar hasn't fought in forever and is out indefinitely. Who is next? Mir? Ok but he was just cussed out two fights in a row by Dana and at one point specifically stated not to be in the title hunt.


Schaub is correct but only because the UFC HW division is about as deep as Strikeforce's welterweight, lightweight and middleweight divisions.

Mir would be more deserving. Maybe Overeem gets the shot?

Oh, once the SF guys come in Schaub goes back to the end of the line. But Mir is probably who Brendan Schaub will fight to determine the number 1 contender.

But who else is there? Nog was a relevant win in 2010 by the way. Didn't Cain beat the guy to get his title shot? Wasn't he a contender unfairly written off after facing Couture? Now he loses to a guy who turns around and does Brock Lesnar as dirty and he is washed up suddenly?

i hope he does get a shot if he beats Nog...so we can see an emphatic end to this nonsense which is Brendan Schaub. I think Nog will win.

I think the Match with Mir and Schaub that was rumored months ago come to fruition if Schaub wins being that they are both healthy. He will have to fight and win again to seriously be in the #1 contender conversation.

With Wolf on this, it's not like there is many contenders in the division at the moment.

Lesnar is out, Mir was crushed by Carwin not that long ago, and Cigano will get his shot in the fall.

Strikeforce would be nuts to allow the Grand Prix winner to leave.

Mir vs Schaub as a title eliminator make sense.

Generally the vets and former Champions get the nod over up and comers. Both JDS and Cain had to fight a couple more fights then Schaub has in the UFC before they got shots and both those guys were undefeated in the UFC and were more promising prospects. So IMO he needs more time to marinate.

It's not like they'll be alot of opponents around for the Cigano vs Cain winner at the beginning of 2012, so it makes sense to have Mir and Schaub duke it out for a shot at the champion.

I wouldn't object. But I also wouldn't object to the UFC waiting to give him a shot.

If he beats Nog then Mir he'd deserve a shot but not if he just beats Nog.

Mir has been trashed by Dana two fights in a row and has fallen out of White's good graces.

Fair enough the Cro Cop fight was a bit stinky, but Dana was way out of line to criticize Mir for dominating Nelson.

if schaub beats nog, i think it makes him a definite top-10, but nowhere close to being a #1 contender. if he wins, i think him versus Mir would be a good match to see where he stands. or if not, versus carwin would also be good.

I don't know if he'd fight Carwin as they are teammates.
