More ridiculous censorship

Have you guys seen that Mark Twain's classic, Huck Finn is going to be reprinted and redistributed to remove the word nigger? The only place it's used is in reference to Huck's friend, Nigger Jim, who is a slave that Huck tries to help.
How bad has it gotten when one piece of shit,ONE, complains and a classic is destroyed. It's fucking sad...I hate ignorant fucking people.

Yeah, this is wrong. This art is a reflection of reality(past), editing it doesn't change it and is a disservice education. Good or bad, the past is real and shouldn't be hidden in such a manner.

Let us not forget they are removing the word Injun and replacing it with indian and half-breed to half-blood. I don't approve of it either. For one thing that is how people talked back then. Is the book dated? Yes. It is dated back to the late 1800s, where they used words on the Mississippi like Injun, Nigger, and half-breed. Leave education to the teachers and leave the damn politics for something important like...cutting the budget, buying up treasury bonds and telling the little yellow people to fuck the Yuan.

As adults we can rationalize the context, but asking school kids to do it is maybe asking too much.

Does these edits "destroy" the intent or the artistic expression with which this book was written? No, not in the least.

Do books written in 2011 have to go through an editor before they reach the final press? Yes of coarse. Is the "art" destroyed then? Possibly but we the reader never know of it.

At the same time Capt. You cant take away this country's history...good or bad. It should stay the way it was.

the change is aimed at making this available to young school kids. And with the word Nigger in it, i'd be pretty tentative to giving this to a 6th grader. What if u were the lone black kid in a class reading that book? Even in HS that would cause havoc.

And there are always peices of history that are changed or left out to make the broader picture available to a broader audience.

And the original version will always be out there.

I'd like to hear the opinions of some prominent US writers on this.

PC censorship like this is indefensible. Some times shit hurts people's feelings. But if you're really offended by a book that is over 100 years old, that is a you fucking problem.
