The only thing with that "proper" tackling is that you'll see a lot more defenders getting arm/shoulder injuries. Maybe the league cares less about those than the traumatic head-shots though...

The VP of operations admitted they care less about those kinds of injuries this morning,

Oh I agree defenses are more complex. My point was QB's haven't kept up. Taking off the helmet absolutely solves the problem...and risks destroying the sport. They will never do it.

So true...

Without the helmet so many guys would be shying away from the kind of contact they make now, then you'd endup getting concussions from knees to the head, straight head to ground contact, ect, the problem is solved with suspensions for hits that are obviously lead with the helmet, some can be unintentional.

THIS

Talk of taking the helmet off is ridiculous, that causes more problems

Nah. It slows the entire sport down. There would of course be some of that, but think about how one plays sandlot football. It's a grab and tackle sport not a drive and tackle sport. Understanding the helmet as a pad is just an error. It is a weapon.

The point is moot though. It's never gonna happen.

It's protection, and you'd want the sport slowed down? Suspensions for deliberate helmet hits is the way to go.

they need to at least flag the hits, most of the times the reffs ignore them as if they didnt happen

I DON'T want the sport slowed down. I want it fast and violent. I want competent QB's. But we simply don't have enough of them.

How exactly does one determine intent?

Intent is obvious, Meriweather's hit was clearly intentional, the hit on Desean semi-intentional (he wanted to blow him up which is the main problem but not hit helmet to helmet) the hit on Gresham clearly intentional, Harrison's intentional. These QBs are only a small part of the problem, when you have guys sitting back there waiting to make the huge highlight reel hit and are loading up waiting to become a "human missile" that's where the problem mostly comes from. Don't remember who said it on SC yesterday, but whom ever said it used to be mostly arm tackles, now days these guys realize that an arm tackle could result in a serious injury and most of them lead with the shoulder now instead, some of the time they endup leading with the helmet.

I think that is the core problem. The game has gotta be softened to account for it or there is going to be a catastrophic injury on national tv and the nfl wants no part of it.

Only one of those hits this season involved a QB leading the WR into the hit

LOL, you say inent is obvious and in the next sentence call something "semi-intentional???"

It is IMPOSSIBLE to get in a guys head and determine intent.

BTW the Gresham hit was legal by rule. A player in posession of the ball is by definition ad is beyond the scope of what is happening according to the VP of NFL Operations.

The NFL is a privilege not a right, and these guys agree that this risk is part of the game.

The Gresham play is not relevant. Kolb led Desean (partly because he was getting drilled himself) go to 33 seconds
