See Panther, it's obvious that you don't get it, blocking punches with his head was a major part of Briggs's strategy for winning this fight. Unfortunately for Briggs, his plan failed, Vitali never broke his right hand, got arm weary or punched himself out, from popping Briggs upside his head.

| From fightnews.com:
Heavyweight title challenger Shannon Briggs is reportedly in critical condition in the intensive care unit at the University Hospital Eppendorf in Hamburg, Germany. Briggs suffered fractures below both eyes as well as a concussion, after taking dozens of hard shots from WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on Saturday night, but is responsive according to RTL. He also suffered a pulled tendon and torn muscle in his right arm.
Briggs was rushed to the hospital after the fight as doctors feared a possible cerebral hemorrhage after observing symptoms associated with neurological disturbances and drowsiness.
Referee Ian John-Lewis, who has received criticism for not stopping the fight, said he was within “one or two shots” of stopping it. “It was a heavyweight world championship,” he said. “These are tough guys and as long as a man fights back, you have to give him a chance.”
this is horrible. Boxing is brutal. Briggs's corner or the ref (or even the German commission) needs to step in and stop that fight much earlier.

But the corner should have acted in my view.

| The last 2 rounds were just plain horrible for Briggs. I was upset watching it because it obviously needed to be stopped, all Briggs was doing was getting pounded on. I hope Briggs ends up in good health and enjoys the 6 figure deal he got off this fight (he should retire).
Briggs is one tough mutherfucker.

| The ref's job is to protect the fighter, especially if he can't protect himself. Especially if the doctor and corner won't. | |

Yup. But there shouldn't be a fixed standard. Two younguns with no experience ought be stopped far earlier than a championship fight between two experienced fighters. I like the ref's general attitude. He may have fallen down in his judgement of whether Briggs could protect himself.

True, but the ref isn't a doctor. It's a hard position to put him in when the corner won't stop it. I tend to think in cases like this it's up to the corner to be professional and take care of their man. Briggs has got to be done for good now.
