Occasionally in the world of sports one sees something that is a pure expression of will, beauty, creativity, determination or courage, or is so unexpected as to defy belief in what one is seeing. These moments can be so emotionally gripping that even as a spectator we get goose pimples, tight throats and welling eyes. In no particular order here are some of those from my lifetime.
Gabrielle Andersen Scheiss-The inaugural women's Olympic Marathon was held in the Los Angeles heat in 1984. Joanie Benoit shocked us and won the race handily. But there was heart stopping finish for 37th place. A Swiss runner was in obvious distress as she entered the Coliseum where she had to run a lap to finish. If anyone touched her she was DQ'd. Sheiss stumbled, lumbered, staggered, waddled, ranged all over the track and stopped more than once. That lap seemed to take her an hour. My Dad and I were screaming, him for her to get helped, me for her to finish. Somehow she made it. Pure determination.
Shun Fujimoto-It is 1976 in Montreal. The Japanese men's gymnastics team is on the verge of dethroning the Soviets. It is Japan's turn on the rings. Fujimoto needs a good score. The problem is he has broken his kneecap during the floor exercise. He KNOWS he will have to execute a violent, twisting and somersaulting dismount and will have to stay on his feet to get that kind of score. Shun Fujimoto makes the attempt. I remember watching him get lifted onto the rings and thinking "It doesn't matter how this turns out. THIS is what courage is." On his landing Shun Fujimoto dislocated his kneecap and tore two ligaments in that knee. He also stuck that landing and Japan got her gold.
Barry Sanders-There is no one moment here. Simply the most creative and unique running back I have ever seen. I got Direct TV just so I could watch Barry Sanders every week. Some of his most remarkable runs were turning a five yard loss into no gain.
Muhammad Ali defeats Leon Spinks.-Ali is 36, has taken way too many shots and is visibly in decline not just as a fighter, but as a man. But how could one not watch? I remember asking my Dad if Ali could dance for 15 rounds. He sadly shook his head. Yet somehow, in an astonishing example of mind over matter, Muhammad Ali recalled what he used to be. He was still dancing and moving in the sixth..and the ninth...and the twelfth and God help me the fifteenth. The Superdome is roaring, my Dad and I have been on our feet since about round five not really believing what we were seeing. It simply wasn't possible. Except this was Ali.
Manny Pacquiao knocks out David Diaz-This win pales given what Manny has since done, but at the time it was shocking. Manny had been a one handed, off balance, linear moving, athletic dynamo up until this time. Two minutes into the Diaz fight I was shouting at my brother "Who the hell is THIS guy?" Decent balance, a potent right hand and circling footwork he had never displayed before. Manny Pacquiao had learned how to box...at age 29! I'd never seen such a thing.
Secretariat-So what if he was a horse. His hold over the USA in the spring of 1973 had to be experienced. He was on the cover of SI, Time and Newsweek in the same week. He'd set records in the first two legs of the Triple Crown (which hadn't been won for 25 years). But NOBODY was prepared for what unfolded that day at Belmont. Big Red ran to the lead with Sham, and then he broke Sham's spirit. Sham was No stiff. He ran what is still the second fastest Kentucky Derby ever. Secretariat was so fast and so efficient the camera showing the race had to keep retreating in order to get any other horse in the picture. The most famous call in racing is the disbelieving Chic Anderson's "He is moving like a tremendous machine!" It was a display of athletic perfection that may be unavailable to men. How perfect? No other horse in history has ever run a time within TEN LENGTHS of Big Red's 2:24 flat.
Pyrros Dimas-One of the immortal weightlifters of all time and Greece's national hero is trying one more Olympics, this time on his home turf. He is going for an unprecedented fourth gold medal. But nobody really expects anything. Dimas is 32 and hasn't been very active in recent years. He is stunningly in third place when he goes for his last clean and jerk. Instead of going for the silver, he tries to win and falls just short. But that's not the magic here. Instead it is how the people of Greece treat the bronze medalist. One of the most heartfelt tributes in the history of sport. Afterwards the gold medal winner George Azinadze was asked how he felt having to wait for the bronze medalist ovation. To his eternal credit he answered "Dimas is NOT a bronze medalist. He is a three time champion." Jump ahead to about four minutes. The ovation went on for over eight minutes, long after this video ends
1980 US Hockey Team-This is another one that unless you were living then, you'll never quite get. We had a struggling economy, an utterly inept President, the loonie Muslims were raising hell...wait a minute. The country was crying for a reason to feel good about itself. There was no reason going into the 1980 games to believe that the hockey team the impossibly great Soviets had destroyed 10-3 a week before the games had any shot. And yet here they were having shocked the Czechs among others. The game was at 5pm on a Friday but wasn't shown live. It came on at 8pm on tape delay. But in the days before the internet or all-news cable channels etc nobody knew the outcome. The broadcast opens and Jim McKay is backed by crazed people in Lake Placid chanting "USA! USA!" I thought to myself, "Nah, it can't be." But like 100 million other Americans I watched. A little luck, great coaching, self belief and Do you believe in Miracles? YES! That night a bunch of college hockey players changed the way the USA thought about itself.
2004 Red Sox-I really feared my Dad might die the way his Dad did. Having never seen the Red Sox win a title. There are two moments that were HOLY CRAP moments in that run. Dave Roberts stealing second base in the ninth inning of game four with the Yankees. It had to happen and the Sox had NEVER EVER been known for their speed. Then Big Schill strapping it on in game six and, pushing off a surgically repaired ankle, showing as large a set of gonads as any baseball player has ever shown. For this story watch the most recent 30 30 on ESPN.
The boxing life of Alexis Arguello-Coming on the boxing scene just as Ali left it, Arguello provided another way to be an athlete. One didn't have to be a loudmouthed showboat, didn't have to brag, didn't have to demean the other guy. Nor did one have to subscribe to Roberto Duran's near thuggishly overdone machismo. Instead one could ooze class, could always be charitable to the guy he'd beaten, could elevate a sport in that way. For me and many of my generation he provided the model for athletic behavior. One COULD be a gentleman off the field and still be a killer on it. Make no mistake, Alexis Arguello was an assassin in the ring. Life lesson from a poor, uneducated kid from Managua.
I've gotta stop. I could go all-night.

I should be killed. May 10, 1970 and Saint Robert flies through the air like Superman.

None of it would have been possible had it not been for Noel Picard putting his stick between Orr's skates.I used to have that famous poster.

Nice list Marble... Particularly touched by anything Sanders did. Many knock(ed) his style and criticize for the losses while refusing to admit the incredible ability that none at his position have ever posessed.
I'd have added Jesse Owens in 1936, Bird v. Magic in 1979 (NCAA), Giants over Pats Superbowl, The Thrilla in Manilla and a Michael Jordan career reel (To name a few) for my taste.

The Scheiss one reminds me of Derek Redmond:
He might have run into trouble but this chip looks like destiny:
Some NBA impressive moments:
Willis Reed:
Isiah Thomas, making a much better player than GM, severely sprains an ankle but still gives everything he has to send it to game 7:
Cannot have Magic Moments without MJ:
The game that made me falsely believe that Lebron James had discovered a hidden killer instinct like MJ and Kobe:
