He often trains in a karategi as well. I have read some compelling evidence suggesting that training grappling in a gi has value in terms of MMA grappling.
Penn, Aoki, Fedor all started with gis.

Yah I have seen much better machida training vids before - sry to post a yawner, but its all I have seen recently. I just wish we could get some Machida Silva sparring sessions on tape.... they should freakin sell that shit.

wolf is right training gi for mma does help in alot of coaches opinions. I have had several coaches tell me to gi up and stated that it would slow me down and focus on technique.
