I don't know who this guy is, but he's doing some exceptional video work. Bird introduced him in some earlier posts.
I was going through some of his work last night and stumbled on this. The clarity of the footage really makes some things more visible than one usually finds. Here are some things to look for in this video
-at 27 seconds watch Rocky Marciano's feet. He does a double cha-cha move, fast tiny little steps to optimize distance against Walcott and then drops the hammer. Those feet are NOT those of a clumsy, awkward man. They are the feet of a man who was a heck of a catcher. At 37 seconds they show it from a distance and in slow motion.
-At 52 seconds Jack Dempsey probably goes low on Jack Sharkey it is hard to tell. At 53.5 seconds Sharkey turns his head to the ref to complain. At 53.7 seconds Dempsey lands a short hook under Sharkey's left eye and it is over. PROTECT YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES!
-At 1.39 look where Marciano is relative to Joe Louis. His back foot is outside Louis' front foot and the two men's front feet are almost aligned. Then Marciano steps SLIGHTLY to his left and you see his head poke out beyond Louis' RIGHT shoulder. Then at 1.40 Rocky steps SLIGHTLY to his right and now his entire body is outside the LEFT shoulder of Joe Louis. At 1.41 Marciano lands a booming hook, steps SLIGHTLY to his left and now he is heads up with Joe. At 1.42 Marciano lands a crunching right and that's all she wrote. In only three seconds Marciano has been in four very different positions relative to Louis. He has moved from just outside Louis' left shoulder to just outside Louis right shoulder, to way outside Louis left shoulder to heads up. THIS is a good example of what I mean when I talk about fighting in an arc and how effective it can be.
-At 1:52 Ray Robinson lands the famous left-hook that stops Gene Fulmer. In boxing lore Robinson did this going backwards. Now it is true that Ray had been retreating for the previous ten seconds or so. But watch what happens at 1:51. Robinson drives off his right foot and shift his weight so violently that when the punch actually lands only the front foot is even in contact with the canvas. Ray's back foot got pushed off so hard he has to bring it forward a step to compensate. Just incredible technique and inhuman balance. Never forget he is 36 when he does this.
-At 2 minutes Jersey Joe Walcott begins walking towards defending heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles. This needs a little setup. For six rounds before he threw a left hook, Walcott ALWAYS feinted. ALWAYS. Now it is round seven and the two fighters have been in a clinch. The referee Buck McTiernan breaks them and this is where the footage picks up. Walcott simply walks to Charles and for the first time all night does NOT feint. He simply throws the left hook. It leaves Ezzard on his face. Craft doesn't always work by addition. Sometimes subtracting something one has been doing can be equally effective and surprising.
Plenty of other good stuff on there, these are just the things I noticed.
