| http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/mma/09/02/roach.dawson/index.html - Quote :
- NEW YORK -- The next time Chad Dawson gets into the ring he could have a new voice in his corner. Representatives for Dawson, the former light heavyweight champion who suffered a one-sided defeat to WBC champion Jean Pascal last month, have contacted Freddie Roach about possibly training the 28-year-old Dawson for his next fight.
"There have been some calls," Roach told SI.com. "I just don't know about his work ethic. Chad has a lot of talent; I just don't know why he doesn't use it. Something is missing there. Me looking from the outside, it's hard to say [what it is]. I'd love to train him. I think I could get him motivated. He has tools. He can be a fighter if he wants to. I just want to figure out what is wrong."
Roach said he would approach a relationship with Dawson (29-1) the same way he did Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., another talented fighter with a questionable work ethic. If Dawson does the work, he stays. If he doesn't, Roach goes home.
Roach will be tied up for the next two months working with Manny Pacquiao in advance of Pacquiao's November 13 super welterweight fight with Antonio Margarito. However Dawson isn't expected to return to the ring until early next year, when he can exercise a rematch clause with Pascal.

| Definitely worth a try. A new voice to try to get him motivated.
I think it can help a little, but Dawson seems to have a passive personality (inside and outside the ring). I don't think he'll ever achieve all he can with his very good physical tools because of it.

| I would rather he hire Teddy Atlas to further destroy his career. | |

| Is it me or is Freddie putting alot on his plate at the moment ? I know he's the most sought after trainer in boxing but is it wise to overwork himself like this ? |

It what he does I understand it's his job but as we all know Freddie isn't exactly in tip top shape with Parkinson's. I am just worried he's going to exhaust himself. |

| I'm rooting for Freddie regardless of what he does. Brave guy. However, he knows that only Dawson can motivate Dawson. From what I know of Chad, he'd have to change his whole life in regards to his associations that are milking him dry. This is a good decision by Dawson, but is it too little too late? | |

| He's made millions off of PacDiva alone, not to mention Khan, Oscar, Toney. He doesn't need to train. | |

If that's the case then that's ok. I can understand wanting to do the job I love instead of sitting around trying to cope with it. |

Doesn't matter. | |

| Dan Birmingham, Floyd Sr, Eddie Mustafa Muhammed and now Roach? I don't think its the trainer that's the problem. | |

| Thanks for reminding me about that Hardcore, I'd forgotten about how Floyd Sr labeled Chad a " Retard." |

| it isn't the trainer, it is the personality. He is happy when winning to just win rounds, get ahead, and then sit on a lead. In the Pascal fight, he didn't have any urgency while losing.
If a guy has no urgency in the ring while winning, or while losing, then what the hell is he doing in the ring?

The funny thing is during the Pascal fight, I thought about how Atlas sat on Moorer's stool in the corner and chewed him out, and though that that was exactly what I would be doing if I was E. M. Muhammad. At least he needs someone to tell him that he's blowing it or being embarrassing. Something like when Manny Steward chews out Wlad or Lennox in the corner. If someone does that to him and he still doesn't respond, than nothing and nobody can help him except himself.

If a guy has no urgency in the ring while winning, or while losing, then what the hell is he doing in the ring? I've thought Chad and Mustafa were a little bit of a strange pairing though. When Mustafa was a fighter he was notorious for being an inconsistent trainer and not the most energetic guy in the ring. In his day people sometimes made the same comments about him that they make today about Dawson. Now of course that doesn't necessarily mean he tolerates such behavior in his fighters. But I wonder...
