Liddell was only considered a great striker because he fought almost exclusively wrestlers who couldn't get him down. He was a p4p fighter but as soon as he started fighting strikers he instantly became a shot fighter. Curious. Liddell has done more harm than good to MMA in the long run. Ya he was a cool looking dude but his style and general aesthetic will haunt MMA in the eyes of boxing fans and elitists for years.

you need to learn how to read..i said in the ring in a boxing match..no kicking etc etc..a real boxing match under boxing commision rules..your striker all of them would get there asses kicked in one or two rounds..just like a boxer will lose in a cage..the only differnce is one of your guys who go down with the first punch in the cage may actualy get killed...i dont have a ny or new jersey accent either..learn to read and understand what you read.yes you agreed fighting in the ring in a boxing only match you will loss every time..its not a unfair comparison..i said in a cage boxers lose in the ring mma loses..

I get that, but the methodology behind it was flawed. You said they don't know how to fight upright not they fight a completely different kind of fight upright.


I was a little harsh on you though, as you did reference Liddell who in fact did not know how to fight upright even by good MMA standards. He was a better striker than the even crappier strikers he faced and he hit exceptionally hard. He was good at pulling wrestlers in and countering them but not at a lot of things technical strikers like Machida, Silva, and Shogun are good at. Liddell's style has been the single biggest reason boxing fans and elitists think the sport is for beer drinking trailer trash who can't fight.

thanks for your explanation..next time i see one of the matches ill try to look how they fight different upright..maybe you can give me a idea or two on how they do it or would it be very noticable if i watched with great detail only to that aspect of the sport.

Clearly the nuances of punching in a punch only environment would be more refined and technical, but at the same time many of those nuances serve no purpose and would be a liability in an MMA fight.

In strictly punching terms, because the punch is one element of many, because the distance punches are often thrown from and because their are more types of ways a punch can be countered, the philosophy of punching is fundamentally different. The role of punching is fundamentally different. Further, what a punch does is different in an MMA fight. Defending yourself without large gloves is very different.

Freddie Roach talks about Fedor's style as flat footed and bad, but it's actually just different.



This type of punch is also similar to the looping overhand power punch employed by MMA fighters to great success. While Chuck Liddell's striking has been criticized in comparison to others even in his own sport, one thing he was a master at was the ducking right.

Here Frank Mir uses a southpaw version to blast Cheick Kongo.



What happens in this gif is Frank Mir feints a takedown with his shoulders, causing Cheick who is known for using a wide stance that leaves his hands apart in anticipation of takedowns, to lower them to defend the takedown, and then unloads a missile to the chin while simultaneously ducking his head out of the way to avoid a counter shot. Knee's are a common counter to open field striking range takedown attempts so the head has to be ducked out of the way in such a fashion.

In an exchange that to a boxing fan would look like both a terrible punch and terrible defense, we actually have a technical exchange that is the result of the nature of mixed fighting. That specific move and result was pre-planned by Mir coming into the bout and executed brilliantly. Easily my favorite performance from Mir ever. (whether or not he'll be able to land that again on a K-1 level seasoned MMA striker in Crocop is another matter entirely)

yep..a disgrace to everything including the mma..he got someone said 1.5 million..they have worthy competitors in there own sport that arent paid that.

I have a limited experience in Jiu-jitsu and I saw that triangle choke coming a mile away.Toney looked like a beached whale on his back.

Dana White is a scumbag for paying Toney that much. There are much much more deserving guys.

All that matters is who brings in the fans and PPV buyers. Toney did that and i'm sorry but hardly anyone is going to buy a PPV to watch Dominic Cruz fight.

Dominick Cruz if promoted like any other dominant American champ in the actual UFC would be marketable. This is the promoter's fault not the fighter's.

If I knew who they were before I started watching MMA then they were a star. They just didnt capitalize on him.

If people will pay to watch boring ass GSP then my bet is they will pay to watch an exciting fighter in Faber.
Its not the size of the fighter that matters its if they are fun to watch. Look at boxing for an example. People love to watch guys like Morales, MAB, Manny Pac. There really is no difference in boxing and UFC as far as the fans. The guys with the most promotional money behind them get the most PPV buys.

I don't find GSP boring. I find him the most complete Mixed Martial Artist and we are lucky to be watching such greatness.

That doesnt mean he is not boring as hell. I fell asleep the last time I watched GSP. He just grabs you and lays there. Floyd Mayweather is the most complete boxer right now and he is boring as hell too. Some of the most exciting guys are not the best guys.

Yep. Best does not equal most exciting. The same goes for the opposite.
