Ruben Olivares is one of the two or three best bantams of all time with an absolutely lethal left hand. he is probably the second most accomplished fighter to come out of Mexico.
ENJOY!

wow this dude was pretty damn special. it's like watching a surgeon at work. he counters well off the back foot, judges range perfectly on the front foot and just picks apart his opponent's defence. classy fighter

He really, really was special. At one point he was 66-1 and had crushed the bantams. He was an excellent feather, but as the Arguello fight showed, he was awfully small for that division.

the style of fighting is just completely different to today's sport. there is no holding, no leaning on, it is just blocking, parrying and boxing skill. the punches are in bunches and it's appears to be constant action. i think referees aren't strict enough with holding nowadays. like when i watch Bernard Hopkins he throws a punch with his head basically following that lead punch, smother the opponent, tie em up, get in a couple of crafty digs, get seperated and do it again. i think there's way too much holding in modern boxing

While I largely agree with your first sentence, Ruben Olivares is not a random sample. He's an all-time great and he fights like one. He NEVER wanted to clinch because it prevented him from punching

Agreed. He's my pick for the finest Mexican figther of all times. I put him way above Julio, but that's just me. Could you imagine a fight between Salvador Sanchez and Ruben Olivares?? I wouldn't care who won as long as I saw it.

At feather where they'd had to have met I think Sal beats him pretty convincingly. Ruben at feather was really short and stumpy. Yeah he gave Arguello fits right up until he got KO'd, but that was Arguello still improving and not yet what he would become. Sal wouldn't have let Ruben get away with the stuff Arguello did...I don't think

Plus the bantams today usually put on a good show. A lot of talent and excitement in that division. Not saying anyone is Ruben, but some good/great fighters sorting themselves out.

I think it's the deepest division in the sport and has 3-4 VERY good fighters.
