WBO order Juan Manuel Marquez vs Michael Katsidis

BoxingScene.com had been advised that the WBO ordered their lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez to defend his title against the interim-champion/mandatory challenger Michael Katsidis. The WBO has given both sides 30-days to reach an agreement before a purse bid is ordered. Both fighters are promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.

Marquez will have to make a decision very soon. The Mexican champion is the frontrunner to face WBA 140-pound king Amir Khan on December 11. If Marquez decides to move up in weight to fight Khan, the WBO will strip him of their title and make Katsidis the full champion.

I hate the constant stripping but it's not like Katsidis is a horrible mandatory.

This is an ok strip. I say they could wait one more fight to allow for JMM to fight Kat after he fights Khan. But hey it does put some pressure on JMM to fight kat instead. That is the fight we as fans want.

And Juan has known for awhile that he'd have to face Katsidis, he could have fought him instead of Diaz.

I think they are trying to. It would be great if that happened. With Bradley vs Alexander looking like its going to happen we could have a unified title soon. But hey that is wishfull thinking I guess. Shit like that never happens.

Are you saying Katsidis is not legit challenge for Marquez? Who else is out there at 135?

I am saying my beloved sport is in rough shape when Michael Katsidis IS a legit challenger

I have no issue with that, just the talent at 135 going through a down period...

Since I am being unclear, I do NOT question the legitimacy of Katsidis ranking or him having a legit argument for challenging for the title. It just saddens me that the sport is in such a condition where a guy as limited as Katsidis can obtain that position.

But hey, he's a likeable guy, always in shape, always gives 100%, always a warrior etc. He gets full points for that.

I disagree Marble, since the Diaz loss Katsidis has worked himself back up the rankings with respectable wins. Who else is more worthy ??

Ali Funeka lost to Nate Campbell and Joan Guzman.

I suppose you could make a case for Humberto Soto but unfortunately he's a Top Rank fighter.

Robert Guerrero hasn't done much at Lightweight to deserve a shot.

135 isn't exactly the greatest division at the moment. The preponderance of the talent is 5 pounds north.

Lightweight was a good division until people moved up to chase an invisible fight with Pacquiao.

If we made a list of all the dumbasses in boxing running around chasing the lottery tickets (Pac and Floyd), then we might be here a while.

Soto is considering it, Valero was planning to do it before he committed suicide, Campbell done it although age might be the more logical reason, and Juan Diaz attempted it.

You've completely missed my point. The point is the sport is in VERY rough shape when the logical next challenger is of the quality of Michael katsidis.

It's not a guarantee that Ktsidis-Marquez would be a good fight.

Everyone said the same about Diaz-Katsidis and even though that fight had its moments it was nowhere near the hype.
