| DMAR has nominated the following for the 1901-1920 era.
Jimmy Wilde-First recognized flyweight champion. Legendary puncher he usually weighed in around 100 pounds and routinely KO'd guys 10-20 pounds heavier. 137-3 with 100 KO's.
Barbados Joe Walcott-5'1 welterweight. Over half his losses were to lhw and above. Beat over a dozen HOFers.
Sam Langford-Never fought for a title. But he beat Gans and ketchell and Philly Jack, drew with Walcott. Over 200 wins.
Terry McGovern-Brawling bantam champ. Beat legends including Gans, Dixon and Erne.
Harry Greb-Over 200 wins, 20+ wins over HOFers.
Johnny Dundee-The Scotch Wop was a boxer's boxer. 130 champ. Fought EVERYBODY. The roster is almost unreal.
Stanley Ketchell-Cleaned out the middles. And I mean WRECKED'em. HUGE puncher. Dead at 24.
Joe Gans-Lightweight king. Another guy who fought everyone. A technical leap forward in boxing. Maybe the first modern fighter.
Jim Jeffries-Only fought 18 times but beat HOFers on seven occasions. Crushed the heavies.
Jack Johnson-First black heavy king. Best heavyweight of black heavyweights of the time. That is really saying something.
Jack Demspey-Maybe first modern heavyweight. Dominated the sport for six years.
Abe Attel-Featherweight champ for a decade.
I would add the following to DMAR's list
Johnny Kilbane-Also feather king for a decade. Often fought in the laoded lightweight divsion of this era.
This is a MUCH improved era. Probably around average for the history of the sport.

The Manassa Mauler is so hard in things like this. He was SO important and so fierce and so dominant. And yet the level of his available competition just wasn't that much. | |

| Can these be made into polls by any chance? Also, how long do we have to vote? I'm up for it but want to give it due diligence which realistically will take a month or more to run through all of them. Can we do a decade a week? |

The thing with that is I'd want it to be selective. So if I put a guy I know, and then figure out later another guy is more deserving once I get to know more about him, I don't want to go back and change my votes. Goin for the measure twice, cut once approach. I'll prolly just pass on the section for now because I'm too busy to be bothered, but it's a great idea and thanks to the people who took/take the time to do it. |
