| powerpuncher started a weekjly run of all time great fighters that are rarely talked about then after a few great topics hasnt been around..ill pick it up with gene fullmer.the only time genes name is mentioned is when he gets koed by robinson with a perfect classic left hook..fullmer i rate as one of the 12 greatest middleweights of all time.he was that great..ive seen gene fight about 20 times live and all except once it was against the best middles out there during a golden era of that division and the welter division..yes there was noo phoney 154 lb division.top welters were not afraid to fight top middles the BS hes too big didnt fly back then as a poor excuse.the best fought the best the weigh in was hours before the fight not a day and a half before like today.. gene was very strong and a great body puncher who attacked the body non stop every round..he was a swormer who crowded you and was tough as nails...basilio said he wasnt a great or big puncher but if you are not in top shape your in trouble with gene.. talk about cleaning out a division..he did it better than the great hagler and against better fighters..he ducked nooo one.his last 11 fights were robinson twice basilio twice giardello dick tiger 3 times all real legit hofamers plus welter champ benny kid paret.
griffith didnt kill paret fullmer did.gave him a beating 3 months before emile fought him.florentino fernandez a hard punching feared paul williams feared of his day.and spider webb who was on top of his game...thats just his last 11 fights..he fought the near great charley humez rocky castilani robinson 2 other times the tough tiger jones the fantastic gil turner twice spider webb again boby boyd paul pender the poipular chico vejar and the toiugh del flanagan and garth panther.. most of thoses guys would be middleweight champ today. fullmer gave and asked no quater..yes his style caused head butts and some were accidental some were not..he was intelligent could slip a punch masterfully and was very accurate in his punches..today yes he would mop up all the 147 154 and 160 pounders every one of them...he cleaned out a division and a half yet the only time hes mentioned was he got koed by robinson.
as a live long fight fan id love to have a fullm er around today..yet he goes unnoticed and not talked about. | |

| I remember watching most of Gene Fullmer's Televised fights, including the one's with SSR and Basilio. Fullmer wasn't flashy or had a lot of power, but he was workmen like, and usually broke his opponents down. He did enough to make the BHOF, that's an accomplishment for any fighter, but saying he was "great" is a bit of a stretch. | |

| I think he did a good job outboxing Carmen Basillio. As others have noted on this thread, he gave SRR hell. That's enough to get any figther in the HOF. Great? Matter of opinion, however, how would he have done in another era? I can't think of any MW era where Gene is not a big threat to the MW championship. | |
