Jose Aldo vs Manny Gamburyan Sept. 30th

Jose Aldo has a new challenger, and it's somebody that won't fear him when it's time to fight.

WEC 51 is currently in the planning stages for Sept. 30 in Broomfield, Colo. The headliner for the event will pit featherweight champion Jose Aldo against Manny Gamburyan.

The bout was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the fight who stated both competitors have verbally agreed to it.

WEC General Manager Reed Harris spoke to MMAWeekly Radio last week about the possibility of the fight. While he stopped short of confirming the bout, it sounded like all signs are pointing in that direction.

"I can tell you that we're working on a number of fights, but I don't have anything signed yet, that's my problem. I can't announce things until they're signed, but let me just say that there's a great possibility you could see something like that in September," Harris said about Aldo vs. Gamburyan.

The fight would be Aldo's second defense since winning the featherweight belt by defeating Mike Brown last year. His first title defense came in April when he defeated former champion Urijah Faber by unanimous decision at the first ever WEC pay-per-view.

Gamburyan comes into the fight at a perfect 3-0 since making his move to the WEC's featherweight division following a stint at lightweight in the UFC, and on “The Ultimate Fighter" reality show.

The Armenian fighter definitely has a never-say-die attitude, and it's that very persona that could give him the edge in a fight with Aldo.

"I think Manny can challenge Jose Aldo," Harris said about the potential match-up. "He's got a very good game. (He's got) zero fear."

The Sept. 30 event is shaping up with Aldo vs. Gamburyan in the main event and former bantamweight champion Miguel Torres returning to face Charlie Valencia in the co-main event on the card.

I cant wait I think gamburyan brings more to the table than most think. He is one tuff sob like guida

agree soko, I think Gamburyan has a better chance than Faber and Brown did

lack of current competition and Manny getting his name out there on TUF and in UFC are the only reason he is getting this shot right now. IMO he hasn't done enough to earn a title shot.

exactly 3 and 0. Only 3 wins, 1 win being over top level guy. He needs atleast 1 more legit win IMO. If he wasn't on TUF or in the UFC, he wouldn't be getting this shot.

Exactly, which is why I said lack of competition combined with Manny's name being out there is why he gets the shot. He had back to back losses before winning 3 straight.

Yeah but still. He has only won 3 fights in the WEC. I know Garcia and Brown are nice wins. But 3 wins is weak. Who is he? Brock?

alot of guys on have a few wins in the division before getting title shots, Brown had 1 fight in the WEC before facing Faber

Yeah I know and Garcia only had 2 before his shot. No depth in that divison.

Manny is the obvious choice by KO'ing Brown. I think the WEC expected Brown to beat Manny so he could rematch Jose.

Manny will be able to take and hold Jose down, unlike Brown and Faber. That's where we will get to see Jose' supposedly sick BJJ.

obvious choice because the divison is just so damn weak.

what do you mean? Everyone seems to agree, Manny is fighting because there is no one else. I haven't read anything on here that would point to anything else.

Everything Sooners has said is another way of saying Manny deserves a shot more than anyone in the WEC. Manny made a mistake by fighting guys 6-12 inches taller than him and should have never been in the UFC. He si Aldo's toughest match up so far imo.

Yeah that is the nice way of saying there is no one else in the very weak divison. He wins by default. It was either Manny or ???? exactly my point.
