Not huge news, but much deserved, chances Yves is the ref? LOL
http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Danzig-Gets-Second-Chance-Against-Wiman-25442Following his controversial loss to Matt Wiman at UFC 115 last month in Vancouver, British Columbia, Mac Danzig had every right to be upset.
He'd just lost for the fourth time in his last five fights and quite possibly blown his last chance at staying in the UFC, ruined by a controversial stoppage by referee Yves Lavigne.
However, instead of using his post-fight interview to rant about what many have called a premature stoppage, Danzig took the high road and as a result, he and Wiman are scheduled for a rematch at UFC Fight Night 22 on Sept. 15 in Austin, Texas.
"I think it's a great opportunity that the UFC has given me," said “The Ultimate Fighter 6” champion, who is 3-4 during his time in the UFC. "I feel really happy to be able to get a rematch right away. I told the UFC I'd like to have the rematch as soon as possible, but (September) is as quick as we can do it. I'm glad to have a chance to set the record straight and do it right."
The first Danzig-Wiman bout ended in controversy when Lavigne stopped the fight after mistakenly thinking Danzig was unconscious from a guillotine choke. However, Danzig was still fighting the choke and wasn't out at all. Boos rained down on Lavigne after the call and it looked like the fight might be restarted, but Lavigne's call stood and Danzig was left with his sixth loss in his last nine fights since January 2007.
"When the fight was first stopped, I was in shock," said Danzig. "I couldn't believe it happened and Matt even said he thought I was out. (Wiman) even offered to keep the fight going. I looked at (Lavigne) and asked if we could keep going, but he said we couldn't.
“After that, I went from shock to disappointment. Before my interview, I had a couple of minutes to reflect on things and when it comes down to it, the referee has a hard job. You have fighter safety in your hands and have to make a split-second decision. As a fighter, you just have to accept human error is a part of things, whether it's the ref or when it comes to judging. I just said to myself that it's over and there's nothing I can do."
Danzig didn't blast Lavigne or his call in the post-fight interview. In fact, he did just the opposite, which is more than what could be said for most fighters had they been put in the same situation. He calmly explained what was going on at the time of the stoppage and as a result, he gets a chance to face Wiman again.
"I didn't want the crowd to keep booing (Lavigne)," said Danzig. "He knew he screwed up and immediately apologized when I got up. He came to me again in the locker room and gave me a sincere apology and I accepted it. It wasn't hard to take the high road. I wasn't angry, but just disappointed at not being able to re-start the fight. I just wanted to be honest, move on and hopefully get a rematch."
A rematch is just what Danzig is getting and he said he figured Wiman is just as eager to have a second fight.
"I know Matt Wiman is a tough guy and I'm sure he's not ducking me," said Danzig. "I'm sure he accepted the rematch right away." Despite getting the rematch that he wanted, Danzig said he knows he is in a precarious position with the UFC. Having gone more than two years without consecutive wins, Danzig needs to string together a win streak to justify his position on the Zuffa roster.
"I feel like even though I beat Justin Buchholz (at UFC 109 in February), I was still in the same situation against (Wiman) where I was still on thin ice and was really getting to the point where I needed to perform to have (Zuffa) re-sign me," said Danzig. "The UFC has been great to me, but I have to win some fights to re-sign with the company.
"A while (after the loss to Wiman), I was very disappointed because if UFC didn't recognize that it was a bad stoppage, that could be it for me. But (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva was good about it and said a rematch was there if I wanted it. I'm just looking forward to getting it done the right way."
