Some of us are willing, however, to legalize it because of the money it brings in, and I find that a pretty horrific type of attitude and position to have, because we're trying to stop bullying in schools, we're trying to stop gang violence and domestic violence."

| If you support MMA you are supporting domestic violence and gang violence. | |

| No wonder so many fighters come in to hip-hop and rap! They are supporting domestic violence and gangs. This clearly explains War machine. | |

"New York Assemblyman Robert Reilly, D-Colonie, is afraid of losing the fight against domestic violence and school bullying if the "brutal sport" of mixed martial arts finds its way to the "Empire State." He also complains that his fellow lawmen, many of whom feel the same way he does about MMA, would legalize it anyway as some sort of financial band-aid to cover the state's massive wound that has been hemorrhaging cash under the current (and probably former) administration." also from the same mmamania article.

| I can understand how he feels like that. Any sort of violence has a transference to impressionable youths. However movies, TV shows and music provide significantly worse messages than combat sports. In combat sports there is a little bit of smack talk but most of the time there is friendship and respect between participants.
Rap and slipknot style numetal certainly negatively impact impressionable kids, and MMA might do the same thing to those disconnected with MMA, in the same way a kid might watch a Bruce Lee movie and start karate kicking kids on the playground, but if he entered karate training he most likely would not.
Please no one try to argue that music and media doesn't influence impressionable people, because you like it and you haven't been influenced by it to your concsious knowledge. That is like an oxycontin user arguing the drug doesn't ruin lives because they have managed to hold down a job while using recreationally.

| I see your point Wolf but martial arts, boxing, bjj, wrestling and MMA are all organized sports that help teach discipline. Teaching kids to control their anger and also gives them a chance to use it in a positive way. | |

| Ya but a kid watching a UFC event with Mir, Rampage, Hardy, Daley or Kos talking some outrageous shit and then watching someone get elbowed 12 times in the face while in a fetal position might miss that message without proper parenting.
Honestly I wish the beginning of MMA events had a parental disclaimer and an advisory about not doing this at home or without the supervision of trained martial artists. How long until someone sues the UFC because their kid gets a tendon destroyed on the playground during a leglock or armbar some kid saw on TV and doesn't know how to properly do?
Still, this is petty ironic considering the level of sexuality, violence and disrespect seen on pro-wrestling telecasts. Go target the WWE.

| Sorry Sooners, have a bit of a grump on today and didn't click the link before I asked. So okay... Another politician that got picked on as a kid is speaking up because no one is listening when he's discussing other issues. Does Bob care to mention the brutality of boxing and the many deaths attributed every year? Does he care to touch on the fact that MSG and NY have made bujillions on the sport of boxing?... I doubt it. Politicians are awesome...
Wolf, you're on point there. But we all make choices on what we take in or allow our young one's take in. It's back to the basic, "If you don't like it, don't watch it" attitude on some level. Whether or not it's MMA, boxing, movies, music or anything else... It's up to the individual. Those that have the tendencies towards violence or to just be dirt bags in general will do it regardless. And keeping them from seeing it live in MSG doesn't change the fact that they will still watch it on TV... Bob has his opinion on the issue, but it's not a very well thought out opinion and he's looking for a little press, IMO.
BTW- Sorry if my posts seem a little jumbled today fellas... Took a shot in the neck and am trying to function with a borderline migraine today. Surgery on this bad boy is looking more and more like a good choice every day.

| lol... Thanks for the support, Sooners. I don't know too many that could live with broken neck that creates a headache 24-7, and the occasional spike to a full blown migraine after too much activity or just sleeping wrong. The headaches have become more of an issue than the pain in the neck itself. My doctor tells me most people would have put a gun to their head long before the 2+ years I've gone, but I remind him of the list of unsolved murders locally... lol. The steroid injections are working less and less (I can no longer remember the last time that I didn't have a headache on some level), so I'm beginning to think that it's time to revisit surgery as an option. I'm fighting it since I will end up with some limited mobility, will be down for 3-4 months and there's no guarantee that I will be pain free... My point... For those of you who grapple... Careful, my injury was a hidden one that got worse over time because it went undetected and I kept allowing others to twist on my gord. If you feel anything that seems off, get it checked instead of being the tough old geezer that no one could tell otherwise... | |
