Defining Moments in MMA History Empty
PostSubject: Defining Moments in MMA History   Defining Moments in MMA History EmptySat Jun 05, 2010 9:23 pm

These are moments that showed a changing of the guard, or a trainsition in the sport, or just the flat out first time something had happened.

LaVerne Clark KOs Josh Stuart - 1st boxer to win in a UFC match (UFC 16),

Renzo Gracie UpKicks Oleg Taktarov - you remember where you were when you saw this, if you saw it live. One of the nutiest KOs in the sports history to that point, even sadder that Jerry Bohlander suffered the same fate vs Murilo Bustamante

Matt Hughes vs Royce Gracie - Old vs New, passing of the torch moment, only the torch was punches, and uhh, ...Gracie got passed the tourch?? .

Coleman-Smith - The first time in the history of UFC that a striker beat a wrestler. It was a genius gameplan, learning the ground and guard, not wrestling (as Coleman predicted Smith would do in the prefight interview). Smith let Coleman gas himself out, and then set history by leg kicking Coleman to death. The fact that 2 wrestlers Mark Kerr and Kevin Jackson dominated the 2 tournaments of that nights UFC event only further concur what an upset this was.

Frank Shamrock vs Enson Inoue - First time in the history of MMA/NHB that being fully mounted was not a death sentence. Frank survived the mount, which pissed Inoue off, leading him into running into the great exchange with Frnak, that ended the fight.

Ken Shamrock vs Royce Gracie 2 - Royce Gracie's guard is not invincible. A shock to every MMA/NHB fan of the time.

Pete Williams vs Mark Coleman - Head Kick, holy shit, until then, we hadnt seen a head kick like this in MMA or NHB. Nothing close, Coleman tries to grab a low leg kick with both hands only to realize it aint a low leg kick coming. Boom, Timber, the place goes nuts.

Dan Severn debuts - holy shit wrestlers might have a good chance in this sport

Oleg Taktarov vs Sean Alvarez - Carlson Gracie protege's could be beat, and not just beat, they could be Blitzkrieged.

add whatever you want

Marco Ruas uses Muay Thai for the first time to win a major MMA championship. The original striker. The original well rounded fighter. The King of the Streets.

Lyoto Machida knocks out Rashad Evans, profits at karate dojos soar in coming weeks.

Wanderlei Silva KO's Sakuraba, ushering in the new wave of Muay Thai strikers.

Fedor defeats Nog, proving Sambos worth in the modern age.

Ray Mercer flattens poopy, causing a domino effect which destroys Shine fights, Mayorga's reputation, and causes Dana to sign James fucking Toney.

Teli Tuli, Emmanual Yarbrough, Akebono all embarrass themselves and sumo throughout various MMA eras.

Machida uses sumo to have amazing takedown defense and upper body throws and defense. Machida perennially the defender of archaic Japanese art forms.

Hats off to James, shows you how good he really is, it will be interesting to see one of the best middleweights ever, fighting in the UFC, Im not gonna lie, my big wonder is can he really make 205, and will he even try

Mirko Cro Cop shows us all that with great sprawls and K1 level strikes you can beat almost anyone.

Jens Pulver gave everyone a reason to watch the little guys.

Pride Fighting Championships gives us the best Heavyweights in the world and gives birth to the Grand Prix.

Mark Coleman donates Ground and Pound to Goodridge, Frye, and Moti Horensteins faces.

Ken vs Tito I thought brought a ton of new fans to the MMA world as did Chuck vs Tito. Those two fights brought alot of attention to the sport in my opion.

Fedor comes to the UFC and obliterates Lesnar and Carwin after already beating Overeem, Sylvia, AA and Rogers, proving that larger HWs will still lose to more skilled, faster fighters.

Bohlander gets upkicked by Bustamante and Renzo vs Tadeu ends in afull scale riot with people attacking the cage.

This event, was backed by a shiek. The shiek didnt like the riot, and instead decided to form this thing called the Abu Dabi Grappling Tournaments
