Nick Diaz vs BJ Penn Who ya got winning?

Both have good BJJ, both are south paw, only two inches separate them, people don't beat Kenny striking, Nick boxes good, Nick can and has fought small at WW, Kenny has fought 185 and 170. That match up would be sweet.

Honestly I think Nick Diaz vs BJ Penn would be extremely close. I don't see either one getting knocked out because both of them have very good chins but I can imagine alot of hard shots getting through on both sides. The key striking for BJ would be head movement and the jab. The key for Nick would be to stay outside BJ's reach and do what he does. If it hit the ground alot would depend on who's on top, but I'd give a slight edge on the ground to Penn simply because he's submitted better fighters than Nick, and given that nick is so long it could actually help BJ do it to him. I remember Bas said once when Semmy Schilt fought I think it was that a fighter who's long like that is like armbarring a girrafe, it's too easy.

anyone who thinks there is absolutely no way Nick could win this fight is crazy, me thinks.

MMAth suggests that BJ wins since he destroyed a guy that ran through Nick... A look at both fighters in their current state says this fight could be a toss-up. Since I'm such a huge Diaz fan, I hate to choose him due to obvious bias... So I'm going to say BJ via decision...

ha ha funny how biased this thread is. All Diaz fans say Diaz, all BJ fans say BJ. Other people probably hate one or the other. There are almost no unbiased opinions on this.

Some people had Sanchez beating Penn and it was embarrassingly easy for BJ.

Sanchez and Nick aren't not on the same level. You can forget all about that fight from a few years ago. Nick and BJ have similar strengths. Anyone that says it is an easy win is just ignorant or biased.

ha ha yeah, I know you have absolutely no feelings toward the Diaz boys at all. I just think it is funny because we have a ton of BJ fans, some Diaz haters and some Diaz fans......so take it for what it is worth. All things set aside there is nothing easy about this fight.

While I think BJ is still at his peak despite looking "flat" against Edgar... I also think that Diaz has made huge strides in his game since his three loss streak in the UFC. You are right that at this time neither fighter gets a gimme here...

No bias at all here, Nick has never even beat a fighter close to BJ's level, all of Nick's strengths, BJ is better at, aside from maybe gas tank, but don't think that'd come into play. This is something I've had a problem with in MMA for a while, figher A strings off a bunch of wins vs. high C and low B level fighters and people go overboard.

I don't like either of them but I think BJ would clownstomp this kid. Way to accurate/powerful a puncher to get eaten up by Nick's volume BS

BJ wouldn't be able to stun Diaz for a millisecond. Not even blur his vision for a blink of an eye.

I highly disagree with this. BJ has the power to hurt most WWs except maybe a few. Marius is barely big enough to be a WW and he dropped Diaz with some wild shots, a couple right on the button from BJ would rock Nicky Boy IMO

well it seems my opinion wont count for much in this thread, but i'll give it anyway.

I really don't think either guy is gonna sub the other. They both have some of the best bjj in the sport. The boxing aspect would be interesting. Nick has a reach advantage and he uses it well. Bj has pretty good reach for a lw though. Nick is a good offensive boxer and when he hurts someone, he knows how to finish. The same can usually be said for BJ, although he clearly didn't look quite as sharp with his technique in the Edgar loss. The problem that i see with Diaz, and it's plagued him whenever he fights a good striker usually, he just doesn't have good defensive movement. He gets hit way to much. With Big shots. If it wasn't for the fact that he has one of the best chins in mma, he would probably have a couple ko losses. The fact that he is tough as nails and can take a punch really is what allows him to throw the amount of punches that he does. He overwhelms guys with a barrage of peppering jabs and hooks to the liver, most guys just cant keep up with that pace. As for Bj, im not really sure. I'd love to see this fight and yea, i would pick Diaz because im biased, but i can also say i wouldn't be surprised if Bj lit him up striking. I don't think Bj finishes him though.

I'd have to go Penn, especially if it's a 165 catch weight, but the higher up in weight we go, the better chance I'd give to Diaz. What happens if we say it should be at 175?

But Penn is obviously the more talented boxer, and we saw Diaz struggle vs a good counter puncher in Noons.

Looking for old Diaz threads and found this. Kind of funny reading the responses a year or so before it happened.
