On his first day of sparring, Jorge "Travieso" Arce was cut on his right eyebrow and per a medical diagnosis he was told that it was practically impossible to be ready to fight by June 26 in San Antonio, Texas against WBO interim-bantamweight champion Eric Morel of Puerto Rico.
On Monday Arce was hit by a left hook during an exchange with rookie Luis Lugo and Jorge began immediately bleeding just below his right eyebrow and the action was quickly stopped. Visibly surprised, Arce, 30, was reviewed first by Coach Don Manuel Montiel, who temporarily stopped the cut from bleeding.
Later Arce went to a doctor of his choice, Ariel Baldenegro, who diagnosed a cut that was three inches deep. She put some bandages on it and recommended he rest for at least two to three weeks to completely heal the injury.
"I feel very frustrated, disappointed by this accident in the gym. I felt strong. It was a all a regrettable accident. In my mind, I still dream of winning that world championship but the cut took it away. Just when I received the punch, and even with face shield, the punch was able to get inside and when it hit, I felt that a cut had opened up. This is very regrettable, but they are things that happen in practice," Arce said.
"The doctor told me I can not have any sparring sessions for two to three weeks and logically it makes it impossible to make up the training time for a date of June 26, hopefully my promoters reschedule the fight with Morel."
In his most recent fight, on April 24 in Ciudad Obregon, against Cecilio Santos, Arce was cut in the same place of his right eyebrow.
