FAIRFAX, Va. -- Despite officially giving up four dozen pounds, actor and budding mixed martial artist Jason David Frank needed just two dozen seconds to win tonight.
Frank -- best known for playing the Green Power Ranger on the kids' live-action show Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers -- submitted Carlos Horn with an armbar 24 seconds into their bout tonight at the Ultimate Warrior Challenge 8 regional show. The victory kept Frank's record undefeated in four amateur fights.
The actor came out firing punches, but the 265-pound Horn responded by taking advantage of his weight and power to slam the 217-pound Frank for a takedown. But Frank quickly turned the situation to his advantage by sweeping Horn and finishing him with the armbar.
Although Frank normally fights at light heavyweight, Horn was a late replacement for his original scheduled opponent, James Handy Jr., who withdrew from the fight because of an injury.
Horn-Frank was the only amateur fight on tonight's UWC card. Although he remains best known for his Green Ranger role, the 36-year-old Frank has said he wants to enter mixed martial arts by taking the traditional path through amateur fights and regional circuits, rather than using his celebrity to get a high-profile professional fight right away.
Even before he started competing as an amateur mixed martial arts, he made his presence felt in the fight world by starting the "Jesus Didn't Tap" line of clothing, which has become a common sight at MMA events.
