TMZ : Thiago Alves to have Brain Surgery

TMZ spoke with Alves moments ago, who told us, "I went and saw a specialist this morning who told me I need to have the minor procedure." We're told the procedure will be done in New York.

Alves says he expects to be sidelined from fighting for three weeks -- but expects to be back in the gym in two. We asked Alves if he thought a blow to the head from his recent fight with Georges St-Pierre may have caused his condition and he told us, "I don't think so."

Hopefully this is correct and Alves has a speedy recovery and a quick return to the cage.

Now it appears that Alves will have an angiogram at the Hyman Newman institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery located at Roosevelt Hospital in New York.

The outpatient procedure is scheduled to take place next Wednesday (March 31) to correct the malformation of the left side of his brain, as reported by Tracy Lee from a March 26 press conference held by Alves.

He is expected to be cleared to resume training in as little as three weeks

Oh that totally blows! I really hope he is going to be OK. I like Alves.

Why does Dana always jump to conclusions and anytime someone has an injury it could be "career ending"? According to this he'll be back training in 3 weeks!

Yeah, i'll just ignore Dana's take on this but i send good thoughts out to Thiago and hope everything is successful.

To be fair on Dana when it involves the brain it could be career ending , especially when it's combat sports. Rabbit punches can give you brain damage.

Just look at Geralld McCellan the fight with Nigel Benn damaged him for life.

good point Ali. Doctors might not let him return to getting punched in the head after surgery.

Sounds good. I am happy for Alves. He has a bright future. I can't blame DW for what he said. When you hear news like that you have to think worst case scenario.
