| 1. Jens Pulver - (2-0) during this time with a huge 5 round decision over BJ Pennn anda 5 round Unanimous Decision over Dennis Hallman. He signed to fight in Pride and while many UFC fighters fought in Pride and UFC, Dana chose to make an exampe out of Jens. Still was the best they had IMO at this time.
2. Matt Hughes - (4-0) record during this time with the emphamis Newton powerbomb and winning the rematch, the fact that Hughes won the title basically solidified Pat Miletichs end in the UFC. Also KO'd Sukarai and Gil Castillo.
3. Chuck Liddell - (5-0) beating, get this, Kevin Randleman, Vitor Belfort, Murilo Bustamante, Amar Soluev, and Babalu. Damn that is impressive.
4. Tito Ortiz - (3-0) Big win over Ken Shamrock at UFC 40. Only fighter to hold the title in his division for this entire span of time. Wins over Matsyuenshko and Elvis Sinosic to go with his crowning achievement. A victory verse a past his prime Shamrock. Bang
5. BJ Penn - (5-1) Wins over Joey Gilbert, Din THomas, Paul Creighton and att Serra are all impressive. But it was the utter shell shock blowout of Caol Uno who came running at Penn with a flying knee, 10 seconds later the Prodigy was born. Lost to Jens Pulver in a close fight that went the distance.
6. Ricco Rodriguez - (5-0) Highest ranked heavyweight of this era, start going crazy but listen to my line of reasoning. we know Barnett cheated in his biggest win in this time period vs Randy plain and simple. Ricco dropped Andrei Arlovski, Pete Williams, Jeff Monson, Kosaka, and then had the guts to submit Randy Couture in the 5th round when it was supposed to be Randy time. This was Ricco's time as far as Heavyweights were concerned.
7. Josh Barnett - (3-0) Submitted Pancrase Champ Semmy Schilt and Punch Tapped Bobby Hoffman. In the biggest fight of his career Josh Barnett knocked out Randy Couture in the 2nd round. And then became the first man to test positive for steroids in a UFC bout. He has not fought in the UFC since.
8.Evan Tanner - (3-0) Submitted Homer Moore, TKO's Elvis, and decisioned Chase Hasman during this time. A strong rebound from coming off a loss to Tito Ortiz at UFC 30.
9.Carlos Newton - (2-2) Big win is the choke out of Pat Miletich, he then loses by making Matt Hughes pass out, next up he gets TKOd by Hughes in an instant rematch and then goes on to beat Pete Spratt. Just like Tanner there is nothing wrong with losing to one of the top 3 or 5 guys in the world.
10. Randy Couture - (2-2) Beat Pedro Rizzo in a great match (Pedro was highest paid fighter in UFC at time 175 grand a fight), the two had an immediate rematch and Randy was irked. Didnt matter he knocked Rizzo out the second time around. Then Randy gets knocked out by a roided up Barnett in his prime and then drops an L to the absolute best Ricco Rodriguez ever. No shame.
Honorable mention : Pat Miletich, Caol Uno, Pedro Rizzo, Murilo Bustamante, | |
