- In early 2009 Torres defeated Takeya Mizugaki, who was signed from Greatest Common Multiple (bet you haven't heard of that promotion before) on short notice to fight the bantamweight champion. Yet Mizugaki was able to win two early rounds a fact that caused many to jump all over Takeya as an immediate bantamweight contender. Since that fight Mizugaki barely won a split decision over Jeff Curan and is 1-2 in theWEC.
Torres' previous opponent was Manny Tapia in late 2008. Manny is 0-3 since that fight and is now out of the WEC. In the summer of 2008 Miguel fought Yoshiro Maeda who subsequently loss to Rani Yaha and was cut from the WEC. Maeda fought in DREAM's featherweight GrandPrix losing in the second round though he recently defeated Chase Beebe and Kleber Koike though that victory was due to illegal groin strikes. Prior to Maeda, Miguel defeated Chase Beebe who is since 0-4 (granted one was an outright robbery) and currently resides outside the WEC.
MMA is an extremely fluid sport that is still evolving at a breakneck pace, yet from just two years ago only one opponent that Torres defeated in the WEC still resides in that promotion and that is Takeya Mizugaki. Before this, he has no wins over any fighter ever in the top 20, with most of them being over East Chicago natives in a local bar show. This last loss is utterly humiliating. Bloodyelbow.com and the rest of the blogsphere are turning on him. Unless he wins big and wins soon, Miguel Torres' legacy will be at stake. Entertaining fights with nobodies and losses to all the good fighters on his resume is something Tank Abbott has too. He was once feared and respected in the UFC, winning tournament bouts and making it to the finals in his first few UFCs. He looked like a monster at first, like Torres. But once he fought elite fighters, he was exposed as a brawler with glaring holes in his game. He probably could have won more fights in the UFC if he devoted himself to cardio and improving his submission defense. He never took the next step. Will Torres? Ninja, LA and other respected writers for our esteemed site feel this way already. If Torres can't win fights against top fighters, there will be no stopping people from doubting if he was a great fighter, or a great champion.

| I have Torres as a guy who showed some no doubt about it skills, and then later showed some no doubt about it toughness. Then, after hurting Bowles he follows him across the ring only to get caught by a short concise punch right on the chin. In his next bout, he looks like a tentative fighter, too scared to throw even throw a jab against a guy he towers over. I really think Bowles broke his psyche, I don't rule out that he can regain it.
It is hard to argue now, that Torres was not overated then, but I still think Torres was a very good fighter, thought it the first time I saw him and I had no clue who he was at that point.

| Torres hasn't beaten any truly great fighters in his entire career. | |

| That is a valid point, stateside anyway. But Torres was thought of as a fighter at the level of the rest of the sport. | |

| Young sport where the bigger guys got all the original glory. That has trickled down now and the bantam and feather crowd is starting to truly emerge on much wider scale especially in the last 4 years. Progression is always going to degrees past value. I don't think Torres should be written off but progression is ever emerging around him in that division. He was probably overrated because it was difficult to truly know better. | |

| GDP is right. Bowles and Cruz were beating better guys in the WEC, but at the time I guess we had no way of knowing. | |
