| Mark Coleman, the first heavyweight champion in the promotion’s history, appears to have fought his last fight in the UFC.
The 45-year-old submitted to a second-round rear-naked choke from fellow hall of famer Randy Couture in the UFC 109 “Relentless” main event on Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Coleman has lost two of his three fights since returning from a decade-long absence from the Octagon.
“I think that was probably Coleman’s last fight in the UFC,” UFC President Dana White said. “Mark Coleman has always been a stand-up guy with me. I think he’s going to have a hard time competing with these guys at the top. Age is a factor with him.”
Coleman mounted virtually no offense against Couture, who bullied him into the cage and battered him the clinch. Couture took down the Columbus, Ohio, native without much resistance in the second round, quickly moved into a dominant position and dropped punches until his wilting foe surrendered his back. From there, the conclusion was a mere formality, as Couture delivered his first submission win in more than four years.
“[Coleman] wasn’t able to do anything,” White said. “Is a fighter ever accepting? It’s tough to say it’s over.”
UFC President Dana White seemed as perplexed by Tito Ortiz’ interruption of Mark Coleman’s post-fight interview as the rest of the audience was at UFC 109 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Ortiz, who is in town taking his second turn as a coach opposite Chuck Liddell on this season’s “The Ultimate Fighter,” caught the event cageside, and used his proximity to Coleman while exiting the arena to engage the former heavyweight champion verbally.
“F--- you, Tito,” Coleman said mid-interview, moments after losing a second-round submission to Randy Couture. “Any f---ing time, Tito. Anytime, d----bag.
Ortiz and Coleman had been originally scheduled to face off at UFC 106 last November until the Olympic wrestler withdrew with a knee injury. The 35-year-old Ortiz is now slated to meet Liddell a third time at the conclusion of the Spike reality TV series, likely at UFC 115 on June 12 at the GM Place in Vancouver, British Columbia.
“Tito’s calling out Coleman when he’s fighting Chuck,” said White at the post-fight press conference. “I don’t even know what to say to that. That’s Tito.”
White had well-publicized bad blood with the former light heavyweight champion over the last few years, but the pair said their bruised past had been repaired when the polarizing Ortiz re-signed to a multi-fight contract with the organization on July 31. Still, White didn’t hide his displeasure at Ortiz’ tactics on Saturday.
“Guy just loses in the most important fight of his life. This meant more to Coleman than anything to fight Randy Couture and beat him,” said White. “He loses, he’s standing up there doing an interview and Tito’s screaming sh-- at him. Tito’s back.”

| As unimpressive as Tito looked in his last fight, he should learn to zip it. I feel bad for Coleman, because he is a stand up guy, it is obvious he loves his kids and is taking training seriously now. However, he did look slow and I don' think he was ready for Randy's punching power, which is deceptive. | |

| Forget Ortiz vs. Liddell. I want Ortiz vs. Anderson now. Let's just shut him up forever. | |

Then Ortiz would get some sort of "injury" before the fight which would hinder him from winning.

| Tito was being a dickhead but watching that again...Coleman looked like an old man shaking his fist and yelling at a youngster for speeding on his block.
Just hang it up Hammer. You had an excellent career.

| Coleman to SF? He said he wants to keep fighting, and he'd add a little depth to a very thin sf 205. | |

| I sincerely hope Coleman retires. Randy can still have some good fights but he shouldn't fight for the title unless he works his way to it through better competition. If they gift wrap a title shot for him after this fight I'm gonna be disappointed. | |

| Coleman should retire. He just looked ridiculously old last night and if he's done in the UFC that takes away a fight with Tito which was really all that made sense. | |

| Coleman did show his age last night but if the man wants to support his family that's fine by me. |

| I hope the UFC keeps him on in some capacity as an analyist or ambassador ala Couture/Liddell when they retire.
I'd hate to see him destroyed by Gegard Mousasi in Dream in six months.

If White wants him done in UFC Im sure SF would take him, I hope so
Everyone knows where I stand on Tito
Kind of surprised Dana would say its over for Hammer, with his new signing of Don Frye and all

| Frye was a hoax. Bonnar would lose to most UFC WW's, and if you can't beat a 46 year old slow motion Couture to the punch you need to go home. | |

The sad thing, Chuck will look like Anderson against Tito's striking. Tito is just as bad as Coleman in my mind, and at least Coleman is evolving a little, so Dana could be saying the same thing about Tito after Chuck beats that ass. I would let Mark fight as long as he's willing -- his wrestling is an obstacle for anyone other than Randy or anyone else that is Olympic level.

Hung with? Wow. Neither of those guys are great strikers. Tito's striking is good because he doesn't get knocked out. He has a solid chin and covers up well. I'm not sure he's ever even rocked anyone beside Shamrock.

They are great per the division. Both winning LHW titles using striking as a primary tool tells me they can't be too terrible. Sometimes what "good" means is over stated.

| That would be three straight losses for Tito were he to fight Coleman. I imagine he will create some kind of a rivalry with Elvis Sinosic next. | |
